@PlainSpokenPod It’s what happens when you try to divorce the Gospels from the rest of scripture. Sacrifice was instituted by God and was good. Jesus was the completion of that gift, which was atonement via sacrifice. That’s not all of atonement, but is surely a real part.

I went to undergrad with Mitchell. I like him personally, but he's on the left. Y'all know what I think about all that. This is to be expected. My fear is that this sort of thing flies for acceptable atonement theology within the GMC. If penal substitution is a problem, then I have a problem with you...

Rev. Mitchell Boone of First United Methodist Church in Dallas rejects Penal Substitutionary Atonement for a far more bizarre theory.

@twbe @RitterChris This seems really disingenuous, sir. Many bishops, DSes, and other conference officials offered guarantees that, after General Conference concluded, churches would be able to get out if they needed. Folks who heard these words did not take them to mean that folks would just try.

@Protestia I have, in fact, heard this many times. My OT professor in seminary taught it as the correct interpretation. It’s an old hat, unsurprising take these days, as sad as that is.

You ever hear a Methodist 'pastor' give a full-throated defense of Jezebel as someone to emulate? You will tomorrow.

The Global Methodist General Conference adopted a significantly improved mission statement today that reflects our biblical and historical roots. “The Global Methodist Church exists to make disciples of Jesus Christ and spread scriptural holiness across the globe.”

I read The Book of Three, Tom Sawyer, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea the same year, and they were probably the first proper novels, at least as far as I can remember. I have no idea which one came first, but I do still have all three on my bookshelf.
John Wilson@jwilson1812

Can you remember what book was the first novel you read? I can't, alas, but I was able to supply a couple of early ones (if not "the first") in my August fiction column for @prufrocknews, coming later this week. I'd enjoy hearing from you all in this vein.

Story from a small church Easter: we had a visitor this morning who was surprised to find an Easter brunch. She came alone, so one of our older church members went over to greet her. Turns out the visitor’s grandfather was the member’s first cousin!

Even when they're not this grotesque, most self-written vows are bad because most people are bad writers You write better than the compilers of the Prayer Book? If you say so, homie

I think old people in the church need to stop beating themselves up for continuing to be alive. "There's so many old people here!" Yeah, that's not bad.🤔 Love your olds, love your babies, love them all. The church should not be one age group.

@RitterChris @circuitrider74 My understanding is that this isn’t running down the clock, but putting an end to it altogether. The intention seems to be not to allow any more disaffiliation until after GC 2024 (2020), which is past that date.
