Would Stalin have trysted with Hitler absent Munich? And whatever time British factories gained, German factories gained just as much, plus the acquired Czechoslovak factories.
Gray Connolly@GrayConnolly

Chamberlain had to balance the security interests of the British Empire in Europe with the Mediterranean/Suez Canal (wrt Italy) & Asia (wrt Japan). Only fools wanted another war in 1938 & Munich bought the Empire valuable time. The US meanwhile was a legislated Neutral in 1938

Wesley's view of grace is akin to the medieval Augustinian divisions b/w operative & cooperative one finds in the 12th century. There is a passive moment captured by operative grace, but this moment doesn't generate an irresistible event. It grounds cooperative grace.

“Christianity has surged in Africa over the past 50 years, increasing from 39% in 1975 to nearly half last year. Catholics increased from 54 million to 271 million. Pentecostal/charismatic faiths grew even faster, from 23 million in 1975 to 252.3 million last year — the largest gains in absolute terms of any Christian denomination.”
The Washington Post@washingtonpost

Christianity is flourishing in Africa. But what shape it will take for most believers is an open question. In the moments leading up to Pope Leo XIV’s arrival in the capital of Angola last month, the streets were buzzing with excitement. wapo.st/3RZI9g8

Contra Senator Hawley, America was not literally built on the Gospel. But America is sustained by the Gospel. If we as Christians are faithful, the Gospel will continue to animate America & advance righteousness in our land we love & serve. @theird juicyecumenism.com/2026/05/25/is-…

Francis Fukuyama in “The End of History” evinces that human nature is such that no matter how much we have, amid freedom, health & prosperity, there will be struggle, if only to relieve our own boredom. Christianity ideally bends our thirst for struggle against ourselves & our own propensity for sin, finding contentment in holiness, peace & gratitude.

I have often been asked where I would rate certain presidents. So I sat down and reviewed the top achievements of all 43 men who served in the office for longer than six months. If they had a major scandal or failure, I dropped them a bit. Here’s how I ended up rating them: (1/)

#MemorialDay One of my favorite quotes: "If all else fails, I will retreat up the Valley of Virginia, plant my flag on the Blue Ridge, rally around the Scotch-Irish of that region, and make my last stand for liberty amongst a people who will never submit to tyranny whilst there is a man left to draw a trigger." General George Washington at Valley Forge 1777;

Again, Francis and, apparently, Leo need better economic advisers: inequality between countries is falling, not rising.

In Fratelli Tutti Francis asked why it took so long for the Church to condemn slavery. In Magnifica Humanitas Leo goes further, noting how the Church was actively complicit in its institution.
