@RepNancyMace This is so funny to me. I was diagnosed with hemochromatosis 20+ yrs ago. Until I changed doctors 5y ago my dr had never advised against drinking True: a bad idea to drink heavily, as long term you will damage your organs. But it won’t make you feel worse in the moment.

It’s a genetic condition where my body absorbs too much iron. Any alcohol consumption accelerates my body’s iron absorption and puts stress on my organs which are already working overtime to manage my body’s excess iron. So, I don’t drink much. Never have. Not because of some scandal. Not because of some secret. Because of actual science and my health. But that’s not a salacious headline. And rather boring. “Congresswoman manages genetic disease responsibly” doesn’t get clicks. So instead of printing the truth, which the NY Mag had, they imply whatever personal grievances and smear my reputation because the news cycle doesn’t control me. Neither does the establishment. This is what media does. They don’t fact check. Don’t use information and witnesses at their disposal. My responsible living doesn’t fit their narrative. They’d rather see me destroyed than see the truth. Roughly 1 in 200 Americans have Hemochromatosis and don’t know it. If you are of Irish or Scottish descent you’re at a much higher risk. The disease is manageable with frequent Phlebotomies or bloodletting. And we mean frequent. But it also means you can’t drink much or be an alcoholic. Or it’ll cause significant disease and cancer. So the next time someone tries to guess my drinking habits, now you know, it’s not a story, it’s a lot of bloodwork.
