Today Senator Babet will table a bill in the federal Senate to fully repeal the rushed and ill-considered under 16s social media ban. There is no doubt social media can harm kids, but prohibition is not the answer. This repeal bill must be supported because the blanket ban strips parents of their authority, expands surveillance, erodes privacy, censors speech, and hands more power to an unelected bureaucracy. The ban was legislated before age assurance tools were defined. The mechanisms to verify age remain largely unknown, and we can be almost certain they will rely on biometrics, facial age estimation and other invasive methods. History shows that when government claims to “protect” us, something is usually taken from us in return. This ban will drive some kids into darker and less safe corners of the internet. Real safety comes from strong families, open discussion and a government that protects rights instead of restricting them. Reject the ban, support the repeal bill.
