🧵 5/6 By 9:45 in the morning the Johnston was dead in the water, on fire, and surrounded by enemy ships. Commander Evans gave the order to abandon ship. She rolled over and sank about 25 minutes later. As she went under, the crew in the water saw a Japanese destroyer pull close. Her captain was standing on the bridge. As the Johnston disappeared beneath the waves he raised his hand and saluted the ship that had fought so hard. Of the 327 men aboard the Johnston, only 141 survived. 186 were lost. Many died in the battle itself. Others survived the sinking only to drift in the open ocean for nearly 50 hours before rescue came. Sharks circled the rafts. Lieutenant Commander Ernest Evans was last seen alive in the water near a life raft. He was never heard from again. What the Johnston and the other small ships of Taffy 3 did that morning broke the nerve of the Japanese commander. He became convinced that he was fighting the main American fleet. He could not understand why destroyers would charge battleships unless something far larger was waiting behind them. On the edge of a victory that could have wrecked the entire American invasion, he turned his fleet around and withdrew.

Trump could try to pop open the Strait. It would be very risky and could spin out fast. Hard to predict just how bad that could get, but, if successful, it would take away a massive part of Iran's leverage. Huge risk, but huge reward for an admin painted somewhat into a corner. Another part of this is that even if a deal gets done, will Iran use it just to buy time and increase the political cost for Trump or will it be real? On top of that, will it even be implemented as agreed to considering the factions involved in Iran? Very tough situation here. I doubt he will do some hollow memorandum of understanding to talk more about the nuclear program etc. Would be seen as a major failure.
