@dog_rates I’m adding one I don’t care what anyone says. Paco was The Best Boy and I had to say goodbye yesterday and I’m just …. Ugh. Because he was The Best Boy. Not enough room here to elaborate so just take my word for it.

@kristiecsu @Acyn @RoKhanna Yep. And if he was going to use examples then, “Should a company have the right to not invest in countries that violate the rights of their Christian minorities, even at the expense of higher returns?” would have put the guy in a pickle.

@Acyn @RoKhanna has a good point, but it was a bit muddied in the end there. The way to phrase it is “do you believe that ethics have any place in investment decisions?” Followed by “do you believe companies have the right to choose where they invest?” Period.

@AlanLevinovitz @paulg There’s also the issue that words can have either multiple and/or somewhat squishy meanings. If someone says “1/3 of Americans wanted candidate X.” I’d have questions. Do they mean people who voted? Registered voters? All adults? Kids, too?? The meaning of the “fact” isn’t clear.

So while I agree with @paulg’s sense that we ought to prioritize the truth over what we wish were true, I think his guidance on how to identify people who do so could be counterproductive.

This seems very misguided to me. It’s true that intellectual honesty involves prioritizing truth over ideology. But a key part of that is (a) wanting to be clear about what a statement of fact really means and (b) wanting to know about the origins of the fact.

@AlanLevinovitz I think it would be bad because it wouldn’t get rid of mediocre, formulaic art, just the jobs. In fact if it’s faster and easier to produce we’ll be drowning in it — sort of like how computers didn’t eliminate paper, just made it faster to print off reams of the stuff 😖

Inspired by a Twitter friend: If AI eliminates very generic and mediocre human artists, the ones that produce cliched and formulaic visual art, design, music, and writing, would that be a bad thing?

@AkivaMCohen @Arditi_d_Popolo I agree that producers have no reason to care and it might even be detrimental if they did (could mean fewer shows due to higher production costs), but when they DO get it right (see Gentleman Jack) it’s soooo much fun for historical costume nerds 😍

@Arditi_d_Popolo Holy crap no. I enjoyed the critique as well. The one thing it got wrong was "the producers should care more about this because it would make the show better"

This is a wonderful, detailed thread by a wise and sincere person, but it's also completely wrong and (not in a bad way) self-centered. Yes, getting key details wrong is 4th-wall breaking for people who notice. But how many people will notice?

this is similar to the idea that women who are into fashion dress to attract men. in fact, many are dressing for other women who are into fashion. if ur not into clothes, it may be hard to understand why someone would spend $ on a coat other than to seem rich, but its not about u

lots of ppl here can't imagine why someone would be into clothes other than to signal wealth and status. aside from private pleasure, many ppl are not trying to impress the public, but rather their peers. look at the history of Mods, Teddy Boys, rockers, Lo Heads, punks, etc.

@dieworkwear Yeah, I but all my cotton Jersey from Alabama Chanin (grown in TX, spun, knit and dyed in SC). It runs about $30/yd — which is damn reasonable in my opinion, but you’re not going to make a $10 t-shirt out of it.

This thread is not a dunk on this person, so pls don't take this the wrong way. But I thought this is a good jumping-off point to talk about MiUSA labeling. This person said Costco sells MiUSA T-shirts for $10. Here is a photo of the label.

@katz_2022 @LongPlay1215 @seleln1 @RyanMarino They don’t *want* to say what they mean. They want to allow prosecutors in the most anti-abortion areas with the most anti-abortion jury pools to scare the crap out of doctors. Many of these people don’t see these “abortion doctors” leaving as a bad thing.

@katz_2022 @EdwardsGErollo @Amina_S_Dahir @RyanMarino There will be no “duking it out” because doctors will just take the cya route and wait until it reaches an unambiguously life threatening status. Those that can’t stomach that will leave the state and go practice someplace where there isn’t a sword hanging over their head.

@EdwardsGErollo @Amina_S_Dahir @RyanMarino Time will tell if a crazed bunch of prosecutors start duking it out with treating physicians about what qualifies as life threatening conditions. I can only see it happening if a single Dr has SO MANY instances/complaints it's suspicious. Assuming the law even survives appeal.

it is true that our clothing influences how others perceive us. but while you may choose to dress a certain way in order to shape people's perceptions of you, you should never judge a person's character, morality, or worth based on their clothing.

@jesuisfromage @dongossman11 @jdcmedlock @chrisfralic Yeah, the price of housing here is astronomical. Even with modest wage growth it’s not keeping pace. Some friends of mine just paid what would have once been outrageous $$ for 2 rental properties just to stop them from ending up as summer only Air B&Bs.

@dongossman11 @jdcmedlock @chrisfralic Maine, a place not exactly known for its prolific homeless population. in our county the estimated homeless pop has hovered around 2000-2500 (as always, its an undercount) for over 15 years. last two years its over 4000. our entire states pop has only increased by 21k since 2020

One of the strange things about today's political cleavage around gender rights (and here, intersecting with racism) is how many of the proponents of traditional masculinity do not even follow their ideals. Let's look at how James dresses 🧵

But when James makes transphobic comments, I think he fails to recognize how he, himself, wears things that are not traditionally masculine and were, at one point, challenging traditional notions of masculinity. Some self-awareness may be in order. /end

@rbinmv @mbhtt @liseski @RadioFreeTom That’s because it was massively expensive to fly. Most people I knew who moved cross country wouldn’t see family again for 5+ years. If you happened to be rich enough to afford it, yeah, it was delightful.

@mbhtt @liseski @RadioFreeTom No doubt, that part was very bad. Not nostalgic for that. Didn't say so. Things better then? Driving into the lot 50 yards from the main terminal, 30 minutes before the flight, walking directly to the gate and easily making it. And the planes were just as fast. Far easier.
