🚨 Another real experimental evidence of recursive self-improvement may have just arrived. Researchers ran AIDE² autonomously for eight days with two loops: an inner agent solved research tasks, while an outer agent repeatedly rewrote the inner agent’s own harness based on performance. After 100 iterations, it independently discovered a better search policy, and a 16× prompt compression memory system and a stronger defenses against reward hacking! These improvements transferred to benchmarks the outer loop had never seen! The self-improved agent raised performance from 0.673 to 0.739 on MLE-Bench Lite, from 1,536 to 1,790 on ALE-Bench Lite, and from 0.668 to 0.803 on the out-of-distribution WeatherBench 2 task. That works out to 10%, 16.5% and 20% improvements, and it beat the harness humans had spent two years tuning on all three benchmarks!! The year of RSI is here!

The first experimental evidence of recursive self-improvement (RSI). Autoresearching the autoresearch agent for eight days. The result beats the harness we hand-tuned for two years, on held-out benchmarks: 🧵(1/7)

@Intrinsic29 @zhengyaojiang AIDE² shows a recursive optimization process, but the description alone doesn’t prove the “improving the improver” feedback loop people usually mean when they talk about RSI.

@Intrinsic29 @zhengyaojiang I’d probably call this loop engineering or meta-optimization rather than RSI (at least from this description). The outer loop is improving the inner agent’s setup — the harness, orchestration, search process, etc. That’s definitely a recursive optimization loop, but a system.1/2

@Intrinsic29 @zhengyaojiang improving its workflow isn’t automatically the same as a system becoming better at improving itself. The real RSI question is: does each improvement make the next round of improvement easier and more powerful? Or is it just finding a better configuration that eventually tops out?

@BeholdPaleH0rse These simpsons “predictions” are mass delusion, once people realize the predictions aren’t true, they move the goal post to something else.
