The Ravens are working hard with the fledglings so I’ve seen them less, mainly in flight supervising the fledglings going further afield. Saw more of them today: the adults were teaching the fledglings worming! Listen (video): they use their contact calls to keep in touch.

Yara turned one in March. She's the fourth calf of Yatta – the very first orphan we raised to full independence at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in northern Tsavo. Yara was born in the bush on 29 March 2025. Hours later, Yatta walked Yara up to the stockades alone, no entourage, to show her to the Keepers who'd raised her. It's since become a tradition among nearly all the orphans we raise when they start a family! Yatta was rescued in 1999 from the Yatta Plateau, weeks old, after her mother was killed by poachers for her ivory. She is now a matriarch in her own right – four calves, a granddaughter, and a herd around her. All living wild. Follow us @SheldrickTrust for more videos of elephants enjoying life to the fullest.

Last week, we said goodbye to our beautiful Nisha. She came to us as a rescue, after being found as a stray, and became a deeply loved part of our family, and part of the music too, appearing quietly in so many of the cottage videos. Thank you to everyone who noticed her, asked about her, and loved her from afar. The music in the video is called “Nisha”, it's a melody we used to sing it to her at home during Covid lockdown, and I later recorded it on my album Solace. She was deeply loved. We miss her so much

You asked, "How do our Keepers tell each elephant apart?" Well, its a mix of physical features – ear shape, tusk angle, tail hair, freckling, gait – and, more importantly, behaviour. Every Keeper knows the rescue history and personality of every orphan in our care. Recognition runs the other way too. At milk feeds, each orphan walks straight to their own bottle position. And elephants remember Keepers across decades – eight years after he was last seen, Ndume recognised his former Keeper Joseph. Get to know the orphans currently in our herd: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans

Show this to your children. They deserve to know that there once existed magical forests lit by fireflies, purple frogs that emerged with the rains, slender lorises watching silently from the night canopy, vultures circling wild skies, dugongs grazing seagrass meadows, striped hyenas walking forgotten scrublands, turtles blessing our shores, Raptors soaring high, Amur Falcons crossing oceans without rest for days, and Nilgiri Tahrs ruling mountain escarpments like a kingdom above the clouds. Perhaps we are the last generation to witness many of these wonders in the wild. The Earth is losing biodiversity at a pace never seen before and with every disappearance, something ancient, irreplaceable and deeply alive fades away forever. Biodiversity is Earth’s heartbeat. The moment it begins to fade, the planet will slowly forget how to breathe. If we want a future, we must help the Earth breathe again. We already know what to do. Let’s do it. Protect. Conserve. Cherish. Happy #BiodiversityDay @UNBiodiversity #LocalAction #KMGBF #IDB2026 #ForNature
