@blueicehiggins Relating high weathering rates measured via cation loss in field to measurement of cation + alkalinity concs in watershed (which should go up a lot!) is a piece of the puzzle that’s missing, and not satisfying without. Tracing sec. processes downstream/ocean is a sleepless night!

But that's not all! It turns out the silica that reaches the 🌊 is 😍'd by life (diatoms and others). These diatoms ☠️, ⬇️ to the seabed, and in very little time they are turned into clay minerals! A phenomenon known since the 90's (see below; Michalopoulos & Aller, 1995). If that silica comes from your ERW, you just lost your carbon credit! These losses should be added to the losses associated with clay formation on land. Where do you end up? My guess is something substantially less than is being reported. 4/4!

Let's talk about 'enhanced' 🪨 weathering (ERW) and strategies (that are published) for monitoring, reporting, and verification of CO2 removal. ERW is one of the current 🔥 places to stick CO2 for a low low (or at least reasonable) 💰. For the 📰- I am all in favor of stopping 🌎🌡️ and think that moving away from 🦖⛽️ as fast as possible is the way to go. I'm also 😎 with CO2 removal if its cheap and robust. But as someone who as spent a lot of ⏳🤔 about the processes that move CO2 through the 🌎 system, I think it's gonna be hard! A 🧵1/4

Check out our latest paper in ES&T. We take a granular approach to quantify the secondary processes that impact carbon removal downstream of an enhanced rock weathering site. Measuring cation loss from feedstocks on the field isn't enough! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ac…

This work was made a lot of fun by collaborating with a group of excellent people. Travelling to @SUERC1 to perform radiocarbon analyses was a great highlight! Thanks all.

@dpcarrington Study relating to this article suggests 14kg of CO2 is removed per 1000 kg of glacial flour applied per hectare, not including emissions from transport and spreading. This is a negligible sink of CO2… perhaps even a source of CO2 once fully audited? sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

which carbon company/broker is going to be the first to sell tons with a "or your money back, guaranteed" promise? (impossible for lots of reasons, but still)

Carbon; it's about time! The carbon cycle operates over a range of timescales, from slow tectonic uplift, to rapid strong acid reactions. If you're interested in what makes the carbon cycle tick, submit an abstract to session 9G @goldschmidt2023! conf.goldschmidt.info/goldschmidt/20…
