A letter from Gil Hodges to my grandfather, dated less than a week after the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series, apologizing that he couldn’t attend a little league event. Gil was a friend of the family and would show up for little league and Boy Scout events when he could.

Crazy to me that I’m now older than Gil Hodges was when he died. He passed away before I was born, but I had an image of Gil in my mind as having been an old man by the time he managed the Mets (and I guess I thought 47 was pretty old when I was a kid).
