the iranians were always in control of the strait. they had far more control (more missiles, an air force, a navy) before the recent conflict and could have closed the strait any time. and if they had had nuclear weapons, then stopping them from closing the strait would become much more fraught, perhaps impossible at any reasonable cost. iran's control has been seriously degraded. it's just that they are currently exercising it rather than not doing so. whatever one thinks of this war, that is the political and military reality. normalizing iran controling ship movement in hormuz would be a region-reshaping decision and i'm not sure what trump is driving at there. perhaps it's "the US and iran will have a joint toll booth" as a way to show china and EU whose area of influence it is and snub both. perhaps it's just another bargaining position being used to keep parties in line and will not make the final cut. wild times to live in.
