I would add that while vets often decline to treat wild animals, AI can help you help them even in "rehabber-deserts". The other summer I found an injured snake on the road, after many calls it became clear that it was up to me - AI and YouTube taught me to fix her.
Abundance Institute@abundanceinst

"A third of Americans live in veterinary deserts, and New Yorkers in particular lack access to veterinarians. Half of U.S. pet owners skip or decline veterinary care, often because of the price tag. Misdiagnosis is also common in veterinary medicine, and another set of eyes and ideas around a sick pet’s medical problems can be helpful." @SenatorShoshana

@ErikGroset @Osinttechnical 1. It's trivially easy to print an airdrop module. 2. Unless you have a good way of wiring your release mechanism into your flight controller, you have to be really close to activate it, or rely on mechanical release by, usually, spinning a few times.

@Osinttechnical You can buy DJI grenade attachments off AliExpress or far worse (fiber optic drones) through Telegram and WhatsApp. Governments need to clamp down on this asap.

For the first time, an Iranian-backed militia has carried out an FPV drone attack in Iraq, an incredibly dangerous new development. Seen here, the FPV munition flies around Victory Base near Baghdad International Airport before slamming into a building.

I think there's a 'learning moment'/mea culpa for me here; I didn't really pay attention to this or consider it really a big deal at the time. With the shoe on the other foot, it obviously does feel like a big deal. I should probably have looked/thought more carefully. Kudos to folks like Dean holding firm to underlying principles on cases falling along opposite partisan directions.
Dean W. Ball@deanwball

If government is affirmatively reaching out to Anthropic customers to get them to cancel—as Anthropic alleges in their complaint—that is jawboning, exactly the thing conservatives rightfully railed against the Biden Admin for doing to social media companies.

@ryangrim Go back and re-read what you wrote. "Buying up so many houses" is not the same as "build-to-rent".

We spent the last few years being told by the Abundance types that the whole thing about PE buying up so many houses is a fake, made up panic. Now they’re saying the housing bill just passed is a big problem because it would crimp that build-to-rent market, which we were previously told is totally inconsequential.

A New York bill would ban AI from answering questions related to several licensed professions like medicine, law, dentistry, nursing, psychology, social work, engineering, and more. The companies would be liable if the chatbots give “substantive responses” in these areas.

@deanwball It didn't turn out to be . . . It depends on who does the suing - if it's the targeted AI firm, you have less attenuation than either Vullo or Murthy.

Anthropic has confirmed what I’d have guessed: the DoW’s supply chain risk designation is profoundly narrower than Secretary Hegseth threatened last week. It applies only to DoW contractors in their direct fulfillment of the military contract, as opposed to requiring contractors cease “all commercial relations” with the company, as Hegseth had threatened. This is still probably illegal for the government to do, given the relevant statute’s history of being used only against foreign adversaries. It is also absurd on its face, given the fact that DoW is using Claude in one of the largest military operations of the past 20 years. How can something be both a normal and critical part of military operations and a supply chain risk? Furthermore, I don’t think anyone should be surprised if this is just the beginning of the lawfare and jawboning (the latter being much harder to sue over because of a disastrous court ruling during the Biden admin, which allowed them to harass social media companies). It pains me to say this, and I hope I am wrong. But if this is not de-escalated more “officially” (which at this point means: tweet from POTUS, ideally following a meeting), even the slightest resistance from Anthropic (including the lawsuit) could provoke further action from USG. Also do not forget that this conflict could easily spill over beyond DoW into other agencies, which at this stage have only cancelled contracts but have all sorts of investigatory and regulatory authorities that could be brought to bear against targeted firms. I hope the above is not true, and that the Trump Admin leaves their retaliation at this harsh punishment, and I hope Anthropic moves to de-escalate. The apology from Dario for the contents of the memo is a good step in this direction. My fingers are crossed for positive news.

My spittle-flecked post about the legality of using AI to search third-party data is inviting a hearing about the legality of using AI to search third-party data . . .
Under Secretary of War Emil Michael@USWREMichael

As usual, more lies from @DarioAmodei. @AnthropicAI wanted language that would prevent all @DeptofWar employees from doing a LinkedIn search! Then, they wanted to stop DoW from using any *PUBLIC* database that would enable us to, eg., recruit military services members or hire new employees. When I called to discuss cutting off @DeptofWar from using publicly available information would hurt our military readiness, @DarioAmodei didn't have the courage to answer. Then put out another lie that no one from @DeptofWar reached out in Anthropic's post a few hours later. He wants to play God and make new 'law' and...really stupid laws at that. We agreed, IN WRITING, to act according to the "National Security Act of 1947 and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 and ALL OTHER APPLICABLE LAWS." They wanted the word "pursuant" versus "consistent with" and wanted to delete ALL APPLICABLE LAWS which was less protective of Americans (can't make this up!) We never asked for guardrails to be taken out (lie!). We agreed to human oversight of all weapons systems by saying "The Department of War will use the AI system for all lawful use cases, in accordance, with applicable U.S. law and Department of War directives, including those governing kinetic operations and DoD Directive 30000.09...The Department AFFRIMS that it will ensure appropriate human oversight is in place and that it will monitor and retain the ability to override or disable the AI system...as appropriate." He didn't like "as appropriate." He would prefer "inappropriate"? I even agreed to take that out. He knows it, his investors, customers and employees should know about his lies. Risking the safety and security of our country and our troops are a marketing vehicle for him. Make @DarioAmodei testify UNDER OATH on why he is lying and trying to bring shame on our great military! He would rather violate the chain of command and substitute his own policies (or those of the Anthropic Constitution and the Anthropic Soul) to recruit researchers and get some downloads all while we are in the midst of a battle.

@NathanLeamerDC The DoD didn't issue its AI Strategy Memorandum requiring "all lawful uses" clauses in contracting until January, long after it accepted Anthropic's safeguards language. ARTIFICIAL-INTELLIGENCE-STRATEGY-FOR-THE-DEPARTMENT-OF-WAR.PDF share.google/Sd7jXlW9znUhED…

My latest on the Department of War stand off with Anthropic. The American defense industrial base was built on a simple pact: industry provides the best tools in the world, and the American people (through their elected leaders) decide how to use them. If Anthropic is too refined to honor that pact, the Pentagon should look to the American innovators who still are.
