Offhand — * Vacillation on masks, with abundant motivated reasoning in every case. * Promulgation of made-up thresholds with no evidentiary basis (e.g. 6 feet). * Authoritarian delight in nanny state intrusiveness (policing the beach and such). * 180 on many issues around BLM. * Lack of effective response from science funding bodies. * Denial of aerosolized transmission. * Changing of trial readouts so that they’d occur after the election. (Confirmed to me by senior OWS officials.) * Crazy criteria for vaccine distribution. * Adamant insistence on vaccine efficacy beyond what was supported by data. * Almost complete lack of follow-through on OWS (on pan-variant vaccines). I’m sure there are more, but those are the ones that stick out.

This might be a hot take, but I think there’s a good chance that the new Harry Potter TV show might end up being good

@ByrneHobart Genuine question then, why don’t you think there’s more vertical integration?

ASML can’t figure out how to make money from EUV machines, so they sell them to TSMC. But TSMC can’t figure out how to make money from chips, so they sell them to Apple. Apple can’t figure out a profitable way to use iPhones, so they sell them—and there you go, the profit!
Dr Kareem Carr@kareem_carr

This actually suggests weakness to me. If they knew how to make money from AI directly, their best move would be to keep it for themselves, but they don't, so instead they're pushing it on us, hoping we'll figure it out for them.

My 2yo loves to report on family events (repeatedly): -her brother is sleeping -the puppy is “missing” (isn’t where she was before) -the counter is messy The children yearn to monitor the situation!

@papayathreesome @diviacaroline I’ve actually been wondering how Ring handles this. Will it say “man at door holding a firearm”? Will it advise contacting the authorities? How does it summarize illicit or explicit behavior performed in front of an indoor camera? Tbh I’m kinda curious to try 😅

Last week my ring camera was like “motion detected” “motion detected” and I tuned it all out This week it’s like “a man is entering the room holding a brown paper bag” and I’m like oh Will got the groceries :-) Or like “someone is passing by on a scooter” and I look to see if maybe it’s a kid I know

@diviacaroline In general I’ve been underwhelmed by companies injecting AI everywhere, but occasionally I’m like “yeah that’s an awesome use case, I’m definitely going to use this more now”, and Amazon has scored a couple of those now

@TheZvi EMH being extremely false was my update during COVID. I think it’s actually pretty good in most times and places, but it is clearly false during the most interesting and impactful moments, just gotta be disciplined and know when those are

@diviacaroline @tweetsbenedict @PrinceVogel @webdevMason I’m a fan of bacterial lysates and there’s *some* evidence behind them, but only in non-US contexts. Yes immune systems are very costly to run, and you don’t want them always active due to inflammation. Subjectively is another question - probably you adapt after some # of doses?

I would LOVE to rid my family of both minor and serious infectious illness, but if the immune system already has a "just do what you do, but better" mode, the obvious question is why it hasn't been adaptive for that to be constantly activated by default

@papayathreesome @TheZvi Yeah I like the structure almost as much as the world building. The Bridger thing I do find slightly perplexing, but that was also inspired by the older literature she is using as inspiration (won’t give any more details on him to avoid spoiling anyone)

@Romy_Holland Sometimes I do this with cleaning up toys. The kids are interested in the cleanup process AND immediately get a bunch of play in because they suddenly want to play with them again for some inexplicable reason

I used to frantically do tasks any moment I didn't have the baby, but now I save certain tasks that I know will entertain him. I need to rebraid my hair rn, but I'm gonna wait til he wakes up from his nap bc he's mesmerized by watching me french braid my long hair.
