The State of the Union is not a campaign rally. It is not a fundraiser. It is not a party convention. It is a constitutional obligation under Article II, Section 3. The President reports to Congress. Congress represents the people. All of the people. When elected officials boycott that address, they are not snubbing a man. They are signaling disdain for the office. They are signaling disregard for procedure. They are signaling indifference toward the citizens who voted differently than they did. More than half the country voted one way. The other half voted another. The State of the Union is one of the few remaining civic rituals where all branches assemble under one roof. It symbolizes continuity of government. It symbolizes peaceful transfer of power. It symbolizes unity under law even when policy divides us. Skipping it is not bravery. It is performative tribalism. If you were elected to represent your district, your job is to show up. Show up. Listen. Disagree afterward if you must. Debate on substance. But absence communicates something else entirely.
