Yesterday's dreary BBC hearing made me pine for days of old. So much to like about this: Philip Davies' robust questioning, Lord Patten's waspish replies and the evergreen line: "Trust in the BBC, despite recent events, is greater than any other news org." youtube.com/watch?v=i4YG_B…

Great to have worked with JL Partners on this important report about the BBC World Service. Some fascinating insights into its reach in the United States.
James Johnson@jamesjohnson252

NEW: @J_L_Partners polling for Creative Power on 🇺🇸 American attitudes to the BBC and BBC World Service - 49% of Americans are familiar with the BBC - The youngest audiences are the most aware: 67% among 18-29s - 47% say the World Service is trustworthy - The more positive someone is about the BBC, the more positive they are about 🇬🇧 Britain - 3x as many Republicans distrust the BBC as Democrats do 1,003 registered voters, May 2025 Full report with foreword by @RoryStewartUK: creativepower.uk/our-work

The BBC World Service faces a future of managed decline without urgent action, according to our new report on its Soft Power impact. We've found it's far more than a broadcaster - it's a strategic national asset, indirectly supporting UK foreign policy and security objectives.

Excellent summary of the Ofcom/GB News High Court verdict by @WinnGiles In short Ofcom has sat on its thumbs for years re: ambiguous legal definition of news & pays the price for not actively calling on gov to clarify, not least in last year's Media Act screenpower.substack.com/p/what-ofcoms-…

Despite being the 'least regulated' UK PSB in terms of content quotas, Channel 5 makes an important contribution to the indie production sector. It has a distinctly diverse commissioning supply, even more so than Channel 4 which is supposed to be the sector's champion..!

C5 is enjoying something of a creative renaissance, and so frankly it feels like there's more on the line now than when C5 changed hands previously I've written about what's at stake C5 - and for public service broadcasting - for ScreenPower: open.substack.com/pub/screenpowe…

💰C5's parent company (Paramount) is effectively being bought by production company Skydance Media and Redbird Capital - with Larry Ellison holding the majority stake. Whatever your view on that deal, the implications for C5 deserve to be scrutinised and discussed in the UK.

📺 Why is nobody talking about Channel 5? Britain’s youngest public service broadcaster will soon be owned by one of the world’s richest men - but so far this has received next to no public or political attention.

Ofcom has fined GB News £100k for breaking due impartiality rules - for ‘serious and repeated’ breaches. GBN must also broadcast a statement from Ofcom 🔥

@eagm Good point - that would make sense as I guess the minister leading on the finance bill needs to be in the commons

Super niche Treasury point, but HMT seem to have swapped the ministerial responsibilities for the Exchequer Sec (XST) and the Financial Sec (FST). XST was previously in charge of growth and productivity (as well as duties), and FST for customs, VAT, hmrc etc.

📈As growth sectors go, the UK's Creative Industries have a strong track record. 🗳️But do the main parties have any plans to encourage this further, give their emphasis on growth? 🤔I've summarised the manifesto pledges here - and some worrying omissions: screenpower.substack.com/p/manifesto-mi…
