I resubmit my compromise on the EC. It decides elections unless the national popular vote exceeds 60%. Gives naked majoritarianism a chance, but still allows slim minorities the occasional chance.

There's no good civic argument for the electoral college. It was arguably necessary to ensure the ratification of the Constitution, but it's an anti-democratic device that gives some American citizens far more voting power than others, based purely on where they live.

That said, I would be open to add a popular vote override. Say 60% of the popular vote. This encourages more voting nationwide! Even in decided states! And it keeps leftists from whining all the damn time.

The electoral college is one of the most ingenious inventions of the constitutions. Utterly brilliant, and has worked beautifully as functioned. The popular vote *generally* wins; however in close elections, the chance for a slim minority to win is an incredible element.

I’m very offered a very similar explanation on here many times! The fact is that enough people defect under communism that in order to make it work you have to become increasingly authoritarian, which of course pushes more people away. Communism is the ultimate, “if everyone would just.” But since everyone isn’t going to “just,” you either have to tolerate some of the people in society developing an alternative, illegal market economy, or you have to force people to do what you want, even though some of them really, really don’t like it.
