@ShirePropaganda It's been like reading the code in the Matrix. What I am hoping to come across is some reference that the Minneapolis gamers had Featherstone's book War Games (1962) because it mentions Hyboria and some of how they played it. Bath's Setting up a Wargames Campaign (1973).

Tony Bath even came up with the monetary system we use for D&D? One would have expected the English system just for familiarity.

@Mikeachim He did it as a solo album, we saw the tour which was also good. Worth checking out, especially if you like that sort of music.

I thought I knew the story of the "lost world" off the east coast of Britain, inhabited by Mesolithic people until rising sea waters engulfed it around 8,000 years ago... But I didn't know about the *tsunami*. Holy hell. 1/

YUM DM - Publishing a D&D Zine
I dislike this style of GMing. An open world that happens with or without the PCs is my jam - as a GM and player. I want the world to be real, not staged. And the players to make the decisions. #DnD #DungeonsAndDragons #TTRPG

DM advice that so thoroughly ruined an entire generation of D&D that the company is slowly discontinuing their own product. It's taken years for new gamers to shake off their stupor, and they might not fully recover. #dnd

@ShirePropaganda @RuleOfThule @td10rpg Yes, I can't get a straight answer as to whether or not the follow-on Napoleonic game or campaign was ever really intended to happen. I believe DW wanted the participants to *act as though it was a Campaign*, because ppl playing a 1-shot play differently than ppl in a long game.

@WorldofWeirth @RuleOfThule @td10rpg Wesely did repeat the scenario to try and figure out why the rules hadn't (or afterwards, had) worked as he had expected, and later runs the same scenarios at cons, but I don't believe that rules out the original campaign purpose of the idea

It's been a little while since I've talked about Echo Lake. I haven't given up or forgotten about it. I'm still thinking deeply about it, writing under only auspicious stars, and in doing so, I realized something very important to this game: The X-Files is a Braunstein.

The Echo Lake Iceberg: a shorthand cartography of uncertainty and method for managing the "mysteries" of Echo Lake that may be introduced to PCs through rumors, exploration, and dreams, and any of which may be investigated, revealed, and—insofar as it is possible—comprehended.

@RuleOfThule @td10rpg Arneson applied the N-player strategy game format AND the 'one-to-one identification of player & character' to the traditional map-based wargame campaign. This was the synthesis that made the braunstein concept actually work.

@RuleOfThule @td10rpg Arneson's first Blackmoor event, a "medieval braunstein", was designed to feature Faction- & Domain-scale activity with the troop action baked in (Blackmoor Foundations, p. 4) specifically as part of the Castle & Crusade Society wargame campaign meta-map.

@RuleOfThule @td10rpg "one-to-one identification of player and character" was not unique to Braunstein. Michael Korn's Modern War in Miniature & Tony Bath's Hyborian Campaign both used this concept.

@td10rpg David Wesley's greatest contribution was not the braunstein parlor LARP, it was inviting Dave Arneson & Duane Jenkins to attend, so they could subsume the N-player/N-objective conflict paradigm into map-based wargames. Blackmoor (medieval) & Brownstone,(Wild West), respectively.

@td10rpg Mulder and Scully are the "Independent actors", with individual objectives that may or may not conflict. They exist and operate in a persistent environment under a fog of War. You could refer to an episode as a type of braunstein, but the series is definitely a campaign.

This is a common and very wrong view I see narrative addicted GMs make. As if me connecting different roll results and player actions to actually make sense is similar to chatgpt meaninglessness. It actually makes player choice matter because what they do becomes integrated into the game world and its history. That's the opposite of what these goobers mean with this argument and it shows they don't understand the opposing position. They would be incapable of restating my position without a moronic strawman. They act like their railroad obsessed method of running high prep games has not been the norm since the mid 80s or so and sandbox or club style gamers are ignorant of their position and arguments. We are very aware. There is nothing prep addicts and narrative addicted GMs can say that we player action driven referees like myself have not heard or even once believed. We've heard it. We don't care. We think your strawman arguments are bad. You are incapable of actually understanding a different view despite your "No wrong way to play" bumper sticker philosophy. So no, low prep player driven club games still have meaningful stories. In fact, they have more meaning to the players involved than your gaslighting the players into thinking they are playing a game when they are actually being tricked to follow a script.
Checkered Goldfinch@checkered_finch

@TheBasicExpert1 Railroading makes players' efforts almost meaningful, sandbox turns master into ChatGPT. I agree, it's a spectrum. Also, Mercer have already explained how they do it, and it's neither. They do have prepared campain, yet players roll and decide in process.

Black Dragon Games - Building Bhakashal
How to succinctly put the difference between story focused gaming and sandbox style gaming? Mercer gives the example of wanting the party to touch an item and have a vision, so if they avoid the encounter he would have them feel a tugging to draw them back in. That's it
