@tim39826 @Clint_Davey1 I'd recommend James Holland's book on PzIV maintenance. The Panthers' weight problem wasn't about sinking. As I can't remember where I read about this, I asked Grok for a summary:

@ericbabe3 @Clint_Davey1 But you had not remove the engine of a Panzer IV for repairs. What dou you mean by too heavy? Ground pressure of selected tanks: Tiger 1: 1,03 kg/cm² Tiger 2: 1,02 kg/cm² Panther: 0,77 kg/cm² Sherman: 1.10 kg/cm²

This picture explains why the Germans had a lot of logistical troubles in the war. Lots and lots of different tanks, all with different engines, chassis, guns, spare parts, etc. A nightmare for quartermasters.

@John_Cyrano @minordissent It's next about trying to predict what models other people will use, keeping in mind that since "everyone" pushes the button, some of the other people will be children, unintelligent, etc. After these two things, then I can start to try to assign values to P(b) and P(r).

@John_Cyrano @minordissent For me it's first about different game theory models. (1) Try to minimize chance that I die (2) Try to minimize number of casualties We might also consider (3) Some combination of 1 & 2 based on assigning a relative value to my life/other lives

It’s very interesting how all the blue pressers focus on what OTHERS SHOULD press, the low IQ red pressers focus on what THEY THEMSELVES SHOULD press, and the high IQ red pressers focus on what OTHERS WILL press.
Crémieux@cremieuxrecueil

Accurate cartoon. In my polling, almost 6% of people said they picked the wrong button when they were prompted about it. Assume the global error rate is higher and kids' responses are random, and easily 1-in-6 to 1-in-5 hit blue by mistake. So, if red wins, society is ruined.

@tim39826 @Clint_Davey1 Yeah, though Tigers were only about 6 or 7% of the German tanks used during the Normandy campaign. Pz-IV's were about 40% of the tanks and were about 300 HP, and maybe a better comparison with Shermans. Panthers (700 HP) were about 30% but had issues being too heavy for bocage.

@ericbabe3 @Clint_Davey1 The sherman used a 350 HP engine and the Tiger a 700 HP engine. Its like saying: you could repair an car engine much easier then a truck engine.

@WorldScholar_ When I toured the Duomo, I was with a Canadian who was berating the cathedral the entire time. It was "ugly"; it was "nothing" compared to cathedrals in England; it was "ridiculous." By the end, I was ready to punch him in the mouth.

There are few buildings more impressive than the Milan Cathedral: - It's the largest church in Italy - It took 579 years to construct - Napoleon was crowned king here in 1805 - It houses 3,400 statues, more than any other church in the world. How can it get better than this?

@EricDiaz_RPG @Blackmoor_Film For a group in which everyone is a stranger? Never, in my 45 years as a DM. For a group in which someone is a stranger? I dunno, it happens every few months.

@Blackmoor_Film Gamers are easy to find, DMs not so much. How often do you DM for strangers? I've done it only a few times (for free). If there is a need, I don't see the problem.

I concur. It just isn't that hard t find gamers. We are everywhere now.

@DungeonNoir To me paying someone to DM you would be like paying someone to come to your house and play Battleship or Uno with you. D&D is something I do with friends or not at all. Cons are the one exception, though I've also made friends just by playing there.

@Clint_Davey1 I didn't know about the Papal approval. I'll have to read up on that. Interesting.

William did indeed commission an enormous tapestry to remember the Conquest. He also sought, and gained, Papal approval for the invasion. So it was like a very cynical quasi-crusade.
weird medieval guys@WeirdMedieval

Norman conquest has got to be one of the most interesting historical events ever in terms of interpersonal plotlines/dynamics/arcs like where else do you get a guy who’s so fucking hung up on stuff he has to commission a 230 foot tapestry to process it

@OGCrimsonJester I might give the PCs some rumors of classes that could be available and let them quest for them. Failure to curate player options in this way runs the risk of turning a campaign setting into a zoo. Fine for a gonzo game, perhaps, but not most of the games that I run.

@OGCrimsonJester I like books with new classes, but as a DM I am convinced that I can't just give them to players as a big book of new options. I might introduce a new class to the campaign every 6 months or so, focusing on the ones that are appropriate to the setting. Or...

I see a kick starter suggesting 26 new sub classes for 5E ECT ..... All I can think is, I'm out. No thanks. Less is more.

@Tomi_Tapio @OLaverly I agree 100%, but I've always thought "sentient" was the wrong word for this. It comes from Latin <sentire> which just means "to feel" or "to have senses" -- which cats and geckos (and motion detectors?) do. I've had no luck in convincing the entire world to use a different word.

@OLaverly Not "to be human" but "to be sentient". Fully sentient = pain, pleasure, worry about future, think about own thoughts. 1985 AI cannot. LLM cannot. Cat/gecko cannot.

Slept on this. I wasn’t a *huge* fan of Vance’s Dying Earth stuff (though I enjoyed it), but holy cow. This is the stuff of absolute perfection for me - somewhere between King Arthur, A Midsummer Nights Dream and A Song of Ice and Fire. Highly recommended.
