Tarleton State University just crushed the dreams of over 50 hardworking wrestlers who have dedicated years of their lives to building the school’s wrestling program. Tarleton was aiming to become the first NCAA D1 wrestling program in Texas history, something that would have been massive for the growth of the sport. Despite raising millions of dollars, recruiting star athletes from state champions, to world team members, and even building a 1.2 million dollar training facility, Tarleton University has officially been denied the opportunity to become a D1 program. I practiced with their team a lot last year and know all the coaches/wrestlers well. Everyone is absolutely gutted right now. Tarleton was recently accepted into the D1 pac-12 conference and when it was time to make things official Tarleton president James Hurley wouldn’t answer the phone. It’s a shame Tarleton doesn’t value the blood sweat and tears the wrestlers and coaches put into this program. A program that won the NCWA national duals, raised millions of dollars, and generated multiple national champions all with ZERO support from the university’s administration. @TarletonPrez @STEVEURYASZ

This man was a mastermind. He led us to a national championship. He told us wrestling was a pathway to an education. And he taught us about our history. He was loved and feared. There will only be one Bobby Douglas.

Coach Leeth speaks up on a rather roundabout statement…

I am currently a student at Tarleton state and also a part of the wrestling club. I have made life long friends and relationships with my teammates and coaches while being here. They’ve helped me through tremendously hard times, especially when competing at a tournament February 16th, 2025 (my first tournament wearing a Tarleton state singlet) I broke my C6-C7 discs almost severing my spinal cord. My coaches introduced me to fantastic doctors who saved me from becoming paralyzed. This situation has turned so many people’s lives upside down and we are left with nothing but uncertainties on what is next. I along with several other teammates were told that we had been accepted into the PAC-12 conference, the only issue was that our president was not answering his calls, voicemails, or emails contributing to this matter. If nothing else we deserve to know what’s really going on behind closed doors.
