The most irritating moment from this clip isn't the "monster" thing, it's when Mearsheimer observes there's no evidence Iran had foreknowledge of October 7, and Nuland and Pompeo condescendingly scoff and sneer without actually producing the evidence.

@mattduss Mearsheimer's wrong that there's no evidence that Iran even knew about October 7th, though. He goes too far a lot with those kinds of statements.

A completely unfair fight. It would be praising Pompeo and Nuland’s arguments too much to even call them talking points, they’re just rote professions of faith of the foreign policy priestly class.
Drop Site@DropSiteNews

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and longtime State Dept. official Victoria Nuland debate international relations scholars Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer, co-authors of The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, on whether “Iran is a monster.”

@elikowaz They were forming a colony on behalf of a people dispersed across Europe. But a colony nonetheless.

@elikowaz They were forming a new colony. Herzl called it "something colonial." Menachem Usishkin, head of the Jewish National Fund, wrote that, “Transjordan would be either be made available for Jewish colonization or for the resettlement of those Arabs." This wasn't a secret.

The Bund didn’t oppose Zionism because it was colonialism. Early Zionists weren’t colonizers — they were fleeing pogroms. This is the settler-colonial framework being projected backward onto history it was never designed to describe.
Zeteo@zeteo_news

"Bundists and Zionists hated each other from the start. Bundists rejected that they should leave their homes to colonize Palestine." @simonerzim speaks with @mollycrabapple about her new book on the Jewish socialist group the Bund, titled ‘Here Where We Live Is Our Country’.

@NegarMortazavi @AJInsideStory "a month of US-Israel war on Iran; its growing impact on civilians as strikes continue on schools, hospitals, cultural sites, and critical civilian infrastructure, the Strait of Hormuz crisis, risks of U.S. ground invasion, and various escalation dynamics." @SimonLewsen @JeffreyASachs @TheAtlantic I like the sentiment. But both of these can't be true: "Overwhelmingly, Jews are safe and protected in Canada." AND "there really truly are people in this country putting bullets in the Jewish day schools."

@vmochama This matter seems too important for glib sarcasm, but I guess that choice is itself an answer

@WriterJMS @HonestRepCanada If you'd like, let's have a fullsome conversation about this—twitter back-and-forth can't do this justice if guns kept minority groups safe, the spaces and institutions on earth with the most guns would be the safest ones for minority groups. They aren't and never have been

@DesmondCole @HonestRepCanada There are, I'm sure you're aware, a multitude of shootings and acts of vandalism since October 7th in Canada. One synagogue in Toronto has been vandalized 10 times. You think 'let's keep each other safe' is a reasonable response to that?

@DesmondCole @HonestRepCanada How is 'keeping each other safe' a specific enough answer to what's happening to Canadian Jews in 2026? How exactly would that deter, or prevent, or respond to, shootings at synagogues?

@DesmondCole @HonestRepCanada Again, we're talking about Canadian Jews, in 2026. A specific intervention at a specific time in a specific place. The notion that we should avoid safeguarding Jewish houses of worship here and now because in England five years ago a council issued a report is underwhelming.

@DesmondCole @HonestRepCanada Is there any evidence that an increased police presence around synogogues leads to more shootings of Black people? Or more harassment or stops? I can't counter a fantasy you envision. How should they synagogues be protected exactly? Just wait for a Bondi massacre?

@WriterJMS @HonestRepCanada no, I've been saying that policing makes all our communities less safe for the last 20 years and you? do you care what happens to us when you push for more policing? is this a zero sum game where one community has to lose so that another is safe?
