@MisterSalvadorG Couldn’t find a matching chicken farm in the EF3s path, nor one damaged enough.

Here is precisely the best way to nearly die in a tornado. Sheltering in a chicken farm structure in dixie against a wedge that previously did EF4 damage and taking the strongest segment of the tornado. Credit to Mando Cruz on Tiktok for the footage. This structure was rated 140.

@WxArizona Which tornado was this? Louisville, maybe Bassfield? I’m quite interested to see now because I’ve never seen this footage before.

When I say nearly die, I mean this guy was inches from being obliterated by a piece of a separate structure. That impact that forced him inside was debris, and you can see it after he moves inside. There are nails literally poking out of wood next to the small grain bin.

Personal survey for the Prarie Rose Lane section of the Union City, EF3. This is not an official NWS survey and is based on my own personal judgement. Construction likely does not warrant an EF4 rating but intensity wise im inclined to think it peaked in the 175-180 MPH range.

@MatheusWR The presence of internal downdrafts is what allows the formation of subvortices in tornadoes, so yes.

@WxArizona I thought tornadoes were essencially a very tight updraft connected to the meso in the supercell... they have downdrafts too?

Building onto this, in footage of the tornado just prior to impacting Prarie Rose Lane, you can see a small vortex cross into an open field off of a treeline before aggressively intensifying leading up to the (presumabely) violent swath.

@wxmann I have always had a theory that ground friction contributes to intensity of tornadoes. No idea if there’s studies on it (I’m sure there is) but micro changes in foliage, elevation, buildings or ground cover seem to influence (at least temporarily) more than we think

@PaxBiggs @wxmann Now that damage is more well documented, I think it's becoming increasingly clear tornado intensity thrives off of enviromental stretching/fwd speed/changes in surface roughness.

NOTE: One of these homes did in fact have a fatality associated with this. Structures like these are NO safe place for tornadoes of any magnitude, and weaker tornadoes are able to do things like this too. Violent tornadoes do this well outside of their condensation funnels.

This is the moment 2 homes are fully rolled/vaulted and disintegrated by the Union City, MI tornado. Unanchored residences and mobile homes are commonly thrown like this in intense/violent tornadoes.

@WxArizona I believe is might be this person. “TJ Secord captured dramatic video footage of a violent tornado moving through Union City, Michigan, on Friday, March 6, 2026.” I did some digging online. The footage looks like a zoomed in version of his footage.
