By the age of 21 I was sick of myself. I felt isolated and alone in the world. I felt I had a mission to make music and I knew I had something special but I knew I needed to brake certain inner barriers in order to access the gift. I had been touched by the angel of music and was designated as one of her givers but I could not get past myself. I was the ultimate barrier to my own destiny and so I created Matisyahu out of discipline. A self imposed jail sentence of sorts where I grew a beard, put on a suit, and took off my glasses on the street and spent my days and nights learning Torah in a basement on Eastern Parkway. I stopped music all together and at one point I needed music so bad I went and recorded 3 songs in Philly just so I would have something to listen to. I would sneak up to the roof of my yeshiva with my yellow sports disc man and listen to the music I had created and look up at the sky and talk to the master of the world. I would say please help me overcome my sadness, my addictions, my demons. Please let me share this music that’s inside me with the world and I will make you proud.
