My first tech job was a Linux admin position. For the interview, There was a laptop with no internet connection sitting next to a piece of paper with a list of tasks to complete. It was a great interview. What’s particularly nice is I had zero experience and had just been studying hard- I was able to complete all the tasks and this allowed me to separate myself from supposedly more experienced, more capable administrators who likely would’ve crushed me in a verbal interview.

This is why I'm a big fan of practical interviews. For a computer repair service, sit a new hire down in front of a computer and see how they find the problem and the solution. For an artist, have them draw. For a coder, have them code. For a writer, their first submission is on a typewriter.

🇺🇦❗️“I have no idea what the allies have been looking at for four years while we have been at war,” — Ukrainian military instructors who went to help counter Iranian missiles and UAVs are shocked by the way the US shoots down “Shaheds,” writes The Times – First, the Persian Gulf countries launched as many as 8 Patriot missiles at one (!) enemy target, each costing more than $3 million. – They often used a ship-based SM-6 missile, worth about $6 million, to shoot down a “Shahed” worth $70,000. – The US and its allies often literally “shine” their radars like beacons — without proper camouflage. Ukrainians work differently: mobile radars constantly change positions. For example: just three (!) cheap Shahed drones destroyed the AN/FPS-132 early warning radar (~$1 billion) and another air defense radar (~$300 million), which had been standing in one place for months and were perfectly “readable” from satellites.

The Infantry Squad Vehicle is about to level up. Check out this prototype of the Next Generation Tactical Vehicle that the 4th Infantry Division used for exercise Ivy Sting IV. This vehicle seats up to six Soldiers and provides onboard power capabilities to support the mission, and is a candidate in the upcoming ISV - Heavy program.

@MrFiberNet @bilawalsidhu It alters the UI in some of their examples and is extremely resource inefficient. I'd hate to see what the frametimes look like with DLSS 5 vs optimized raster shaders on something like the fox engine

DLSS 5 might be the moment where the anti AI pendulum starts swinging back. Many in the 3D community who were against generative AI are now pushing back on the "everything is AI slop" crowd. The pendulum swung too far and they can feel it. Nice to see the rebalancing.

After this whole debate about DLSS 5 I came to the conclusion that most of the people talking about it are completely unaware of what they don't know...they're on the peak of ignorance and don't even grasp how little they understand. They just heard generative AI and like Pavlov's dog they just start drooling thinking it's the same shit as unethical slop image generators...for the love of Christ...go and educate yourself before raging on the internet for no reason. DLLS 5 is not a prompt based generator...it's not creating stuff based on someone else's images and hallucinates results. It uses the information from the raster to build up a final render frame with the same information but with better lighting and shading... I'll even give you an example on how much of an impact better shading and lighting has. This is a character I've worked on not long ago. On the left you have a raster render, with some bad shaders. On the right you have a render with raytrace on, a much better shader for both hair and skin. They don't even look like the same person...do they? This is what DLSS5 is doing....getting a result like the one on the right(tbh a lot better) at a smaller cost than actually rendering it. Still the same geo, same textures, same light sources. Some of you will go and say the one on the left is better and it's the artist's vision. It's not...it's just the artist's limitation due to shading and lighting constrains. Every single artist out there would love to get the right result in real time.

@digitalfoundry very interesting direction from nvidia two 5090s is pretty brutal though, i think getting buy-in on a tech that eats this much if your frame budget will be a tougher sell than nvdia is seemingly touting one things for sure, say goodbye to "made with gen ai" labels on steam lol

@ZephyrionVortex @RodeenSilver @kiaran_ritchie It would be cool if that is what it was actually doing (Instead of being ai generated jargon), but it's really just a lossy post-processing filter being applied over the entire game. It doesn't integrate with the normal rendering pipeline like GI

@RodeenSilver @kiaran_ritchie AI neural rendering adds photoreal SSS, multi-bounce GI & materials, with measurable perceptual realism vs prior methods. Jarring/blown-out look? Subjective demo lighting prefs. Faces blend consistently via RT. Stylization loss? Intentional for photoreal games.

I'm seeing a lot of backlash against @nvidia DLSS 5 from gamers. I _think_ I get why: because it changes the look of the game from what the creators of the game had intended to whatever the "enhancement" thinks is "better". However, and hear me out here: If the game developer builds stuff with DLSS 5 IN MIND, wouldn't that just turn it into an awesome enhancement? Something to think about.

@lunarlabor @SamSamSidyBJJ @NikTek Making bigger models with more training helped disguise some of the issues with denoisers, but the fundamental problem is exactly the same as what this video shows; the output is not being grounded in anything that can actually dictate the full composition of the image

@lunarlabor @SamSamSidyBJJ @NikTek It's not practical for implementation until they invent a model that doesn't rely on denoising to create the final image. At the moment it's just a duct-tape fix for bad optimization and graphics design

I can't believe that Nvidia looked at this "AI on top of games filter" and said to themselves this is the future of gaming. Like it or not, this is where Nvidia is heading and they're calling it neural rendering with DLSS 5. The examples they've showed reminded me a lot of those AI generated filter videos on top of GTA V, except that now it is supposed to run in real-time. Honestly, I don't like this current look at all
