Games built for one platform are typically better quality and come to market faster. Even if it’s timed exclusivity it can help. Case in point, early access on Steam while consoles wait. Or the majority of PlayStation ports to PC. And then look at the fastest PlayStation port to PC with Spider-Man 2 and see how it panned out with respect to quality. But folks keep pushing the notion and ideology that “exclusives are bad” when it isn’t a universal axiom, it’s just a consumer opinion. An opinion that both Nintendo and PlayStation’s business success repudiates. Also imagine telling every AA and indie company that engages in an exclusivity deal that they shouldn’t have because of your beliefs rather than facts and budgetary realities. Now imagine saying it to every AAA studio as operating costs continue to inflate. “Just make your project scope larger and more expensive and take longer to come to market because I don’t want to spend more money.” In other words, you want devs and publishers to spend more money and take on increased risk simply because you want to spend less money as a consumer. So you haven’t tested the principle, you’ve merely created a false equivalency poll asking folks how they feel about something. Last I checked, feelings aren’t facts. If all these companies are getting it “wrong” with exclusives, why does the market continue to bear it? And why do the devs and platforms continue to do it? Xbox stopped doing it so now it’s bad?
