The renewable revolution continues the long arc of energy history: efficiency beats waste, technologies beat commodities, and economics beats ideology.

1/6 Portugal's renewable plan is closer to be 100% renewable in 90% of the days, than what you would imagine. I modelled 365 days in 2030, using PNEC 2030 targets. There are obvious simplifications and adaptions, but the results are solid and suprising Here's what data shows 🧵

“A Russian tank that literally waged war against Europe twice – in 1956 against Hungary, and in 2023 against Ukraine. Meanwhile, Orbán considers Putin a friend, and calls the war being fought on Hungary's borders "someone else's war"🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️”

Russians are losing the Hungarian elections in their own turf at TikTok. When searching for content related to the upcoming event, most of it is pro-Tisza videos. Magyar's own channel is doing exceptionally well, too. Orbán is nowhere to be seen, and Russian AI-generated content is not being picked up by the algorithm. Orbán and Putin are losing.

The marginal cost concept — and its application in electricity systems — predates renewables by decades. It has been used in power system economics since the mid-20th century as the basis for efficient dispatch. Renewables did not create it.

Marginal cost pricing was already applied in practice in France from the 1950s, when EDF used it to optimise its generation mix under a monopoly model. This work was led by Marcel Boiteux, a key figure in applying economic theory to power systems.

We’ve built cheap energy but we’re still pricing it like it’s expensive. The UK uses a marginal pricing system, where the last (most expensive) generator sets the price. That’s usually gas. So even when most of our electricity comes from cheap wind and solar, households still pay gas prices. That’s why bills haven’t fallen. Getting off gas pricing is about fixing the system by reforming the electricity market so gas no longer sets the price, building storage so we don’t rely on gas for backup, reconnecting with European energy systems to smooth supply, reducing gas demand through insulation and heat pumps, and continuing to expand renewables so gas is needed less and less. Until we do that, cheap energy will keep being priced like expensive gas.
