Gonna be honest, if you think "Sinners" was a “‘turn your brain off’ vampire movie” you definitely should’ve turned your brain on.
That’s the kind of astoundingly wrong misread that can only come from someone who turned their brain off.

I liked Sinners well enough (fun "turn your brain off" vampire movie), but the amount of glazing screams of insecurity. Movies like Beasts of No Nation or Sing Sing are LEAGUES better if you're looking for an arthouse film.

Black women who say they hate respectability politics still enforce their own version of it. They want all Black female characters to be morally good or a “fierce girl” who is still considered “good”, or the trope of a black female who is the “magical negro” who is the source of wisdom
When a character is flawed, messy, or even pathetic, they react with outrage and attack the writers instead of assessing the nuance
They don’t get that nuanced characters are better representation. Reducing Black women to morally perfect figures turns them into cardboard symbols and erases the depth of who they are. It stops being representation and starts feeling like patronizing service

I haven’t seen a single critique say they didn’t like the movie because the characters were “bad people.” But I have read lengthy criticisms, many by Black women, that offer substantive political, racial, and narrative analysis. Interesting what people are choosing to read and engage with.
