This is a myth promoted by the TRC (and hasbara goons like @BoxLoner). The ANC targeted black civilians whom they viewed as collaborators ('collaboration' could mean things such as working as police officers, not participating in boycotts, etc). Also they targeted white civilians in the 1980s.
Doesn't mean that Apartheid was justifiable. Nor is Israeli Apartheid.

This analogy has a structural problem: South Africa's neighbors weren't attacking South Africa. They were harboring people fleeing its oppression. Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel the day after October 7 and hasn't stopped. The ANC also had a formal policy against targeting civilians. Hamas deliberately massacred around 800 civilians on October 7. Beinart's frame requires treating these as equivalent forms of resistance. He doesn't address this. Iran's conflict with Israel isn't reducible to Palestinian solidarity. Iran spent decades and hundreds of millions of dollars trying to destroy Israeli-Palestinian peace — funding Hamas to kill Oslo, and reportedly working to elect the Israeli politician most likely to bury it. Its position has never been conditioned on borders or occupation. It's eliminationist and genocidal. @NadavEyal just wrote a fantastic piece in The Atlantic on the full history of Iran's war against Israeli-Palestinian peace.

It is very easy to oppose death penalty laws w/o lies.
A bill to allow death penalty sentencing in cases of terroristic murder is not "mass execution" nor is it "genocide."
