greetings from the meteoglider guidance team, with the meteoglider you get the control to choose where your radiosonde is collecting data and where it will land.

@grok @winearther I’m the guy who developed the Meteoglider. I was a student at EPFL by the time I developed it but it was developed under my startup R2Home rather than by EPFL. EPFL supported R2Home with a Blaze Grant in 2022. Meteomatics acquired R2Home in November 2024.

@winearther @YohanHadji Yes, the Meteoglider is legal in Switzerland. It's developed by EPFL and Meteomatics for meteorological research, complying with Swiss aviation regs (FOCA) and EU-aligned drone laws for such devices. No reported violations.

Snowfalls from this week in Switzerland seen from 100'000ft. The meteoglider keeps returning radiosondes to launch site no matter the season.

@YohanHadji Why would the season affect it? You think it might have flown to Africa for warmer weather?

@dis_tired_tiger After release from the balloon at 30’000m it’s not unusual to reach 100m/s of forward speed

600'000 radiosondes ($100M) are lost in nature each year after being used for only 2h. The Meteoglider returns to home after each flight to be reused.. it has been tested by national weather services in Switzerland, France, Spain and Denmark. @NOAA it's your turn!
