Re-reading the PTMF reminded me of the excellent and nuanced discussion of diagnosis it contains, highlighting the fundamental differences of diagnosis in medicine and psychiatry @PTMFramework bps.org.uk/member-network…

People will be supported to withdraw from 'antidepressants'. It's important the help is translated into carefully managed tapering rather than abrupt discontinuation. Thank you to all our peers & professionals who have tirelessly campaigned for this ✊

Millions of patients will be offered help to come off antidepressants and painkillers under an NHS drive to tackle addiction to prescription pills. New national guidance urges GPs to stop writing repeat prescriptions for those who have become dependent #Echobox=1677740171" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">thetimes.co.uk/article/nhs-pl…

Nobody should have to share their most horrific experiences with mental health staff to ensure they are treated with basic respect. If you can only display compassion towards people by delving into their trauma, you have a serious problem.

PSA on pathologising trauma 1. It’s possible to talk about trauma without resorting to mental illness, disease, disorder & symptom language. 2. Those medicalised frameworks tie us to oppressive, carceral systems rooted in ableism, racism, patriarchy, homophobia & class.

'Mental health' is the capacity *for* (contained) pain & suffering — it is *not* the absence of pain & suffering. The latter is an impossible western fantasy, one which has led us down a path of collective alienation & despair.

@Nikolas_S_Rose @matthewrbroome There is no approach to human distress that works for everyone. But I do know that #PTMFramework has been lifesaving to me in making sense of my distress, whereas the biogenetic views of psychiatry literally almost killed me. And I know Lucy to be a steadfast, compassionate ally.

The so called 'power, threat and meaning' framework for understanding mental distress is deeply flawed in many respects. Yet one of the authors, Lucy Johnstone is threatening those who criticise this 'framework' with legal proceedings.
