The GameCube was seen as a failure. Due to its failure, Iwata determined that the console arms race would lead to diminishing returns and skyrocketing development costs. 20 years later many casual people can't tell much difference between a PS4 and PS5 game and development costs are destroying publishers and studios left and right. Xbox - 24 M Gamecube - 22 M PS2 - 155 M Xbox 360 - 84 M Wii - 101 M PS3 - 87 M Xbox One - 55 M Wii U - 12 M Switch - 155 M PS4 - 120 M If you consider the OG Xbox a failure then you must also consider the Gamecube a failure. The Xbox 360 was wildly successful despite the early system failures. If the PS4 sold 55 million would you consider that a failure? The Xbox Series is on track to outsell the Xbox One. Case closed.

Personally, the portable Switch offers way different experiences and expectations compared to a PS5 stuck in the living room. It feels like they co-exist rather than compete. It's more a handheld PC than a home console, y'know. Different.

When a someone wants a system and they see both a Switch 2 and PS5 on the shelf, that’s competition. If someone has to decide whether they want the FF7 Revelation on Switch 2 or PS5, that’s competition.

@WazzupR2012 @ARAARASHINIGAMI I actually forgot that the Switch sold more than the PS4. The Switch strayed so much from a traditional home console that I don't feel they compete with one another. They kinda' fulfill different gaming needs. PlayStation still wins the traditional home console wars, though.

@Starving_Brain @taketotheskyes GameCube sold less than the PS2 and Xbox. While ultimately profitable, it fell below Nintendo's sales expectations. Third-party support was weak, and it's design make it seem like a kid's toy. Doesn't diminish it's first-party games though. Those were legendary.
