Tone deaf from the BMA here. The private sector has not seen their pay keep up with inflation. Most people I speak to have had 1-3% pay rises for the last few years. Many have had no pay rises. Junior doctors are paid £12K more than they were in 2022. Wish I could say the same.
Times Radio@TimesRadio

“The private sector have seen their pay keep up with inflation.” “No, private sector pay increases are lower than they are in the public sector.” @KateEMcCann asks the BMA’s Dr Jack Fletcher whether their position is morally justifiable.

@Seb_Anderssen He's one of our higher earners and I think we could get 30-40m for him despite age. I'd bite your hand off for that considering his annual amortization is about 18.5m

He's turning 28 this summer. His contract's up in two years, so it's either extend now or sell him this summer. Selling him is almost certainly the right move. Extending his deal would be really expensive, and we'd lose out on any future resale value.

🚨 Marc Cucurella on potential La Liga return: “You always think about coming back…”. “I’m very happy at London and Chelsea, so is my family, I’ll leave it for a few years from now”, told Flashscore. 💙✨

@Seb_Anderssen Hato has been decent as well, so the notion that there is no one to replace him, or we would need to buy, isn’t correct either.

@thomasforth People oppose new homes in their area not directly because of the impact on their asset value, but because in most cases the area is worse to live in after the new homes are built. Services, roads, public transport rarely scale up. Ugly urban sprawl. Greater % social housing

Because there are cases in which rent control shifts incentives towards increasing supply. Take for example homeowners in an area with a strong say in permitting via local democracy. Their incentive is to oppose new homes to restrict supply and increase their home values,... 1/2
Guilherme Vianna@DonVianna

<policy that doesn't fix the issue of low supply> works whenever <thing that increases supply> is happening Why do rent control at all then? Just silly

@thomasforth @Layo_FH Side issue, but they also likely impact the quality of build on the remaining private supply. Were I to be looking to buy a new build property, this % would be a major driver of decision

@Layo_FH Mandates for "affordable and social" homes push up the price of building new market rate homes. At levels up to 50% affordable they are really pushing up the price new market rates. Who benefits from that? Existing home owners in London. What do they vote for? Affordable homes.

Is it true that London has ‘no rent controls?’ London has an awful lot of social rented properties, which are rent controlled. Due to inflation and an increasing regulatory burden it’s essentially become prohibitively expensive to build anything in London. And isn’t one of the major costs for developers the requirement for them to deliver a large % of their homes as social rented properties?
Tom Forth@thomasforth

Let's be clear: London: no rent control -> 5k housing starts (-30%). Paris: rent control -> 50k housing starts (+14%). "Rent control is a better way to destroy cities than dropping bombs on them." > is brainrot and I don't even support rent control.

@post_liberal Also now more households require two incomes on full time, or near full, hours. 20-30 years ago you had families living off 1 or 1.2 incomes, it’s now 1.6-2. And inflation adjusted median salaries are really poor even if min wage has risen significantly

@ChelsTransfer With Maresca gone, Chelsea can look to reintegrate Jackson next season. Given the other options and the budget constraints it seems the absolutely sensible option. Jackson + Pedro could also work together

Cole Palmer is understood to be frustrated by a change in Chelsea’s tactics which he feels have denied him space on the pitch. And he misses playing with Nicolas Jackson whose pace and movement complemented the skills of playmaker Palmer, who scored 18 goals and provided 14 assists last season. (via @samuelluckhurst)

@Heccles94 The UK has the most progressive tax system in Europe. The issue isn’t that high earners aren’t paying enough. It’s that median earners are not. Both driven by a low base rate tax, but also lack of private sector growth strategy that has led to stagnating wages

I think we should change the tax brackets. Up to 15k tax free Basic rate 20% up to 60k 60k - 80k - 30% 80k - 150k 40% 150k - 500k - 50% 500k - 2,000,000 55% Then 60% on the rest over 2,000,000 What do you think?

@JustBWilde @MENin4K The reaction to it would have been very different even with the same age gap had he been in his mid to late 20s. It’s the fact that he is a teenager at the time that makes it gross. And would still be if the younger party were a woman

@YoshiJoshi_ @MENin4K Older men dating younger women is fairly common and many people see no problem with it. But when a woman does it, she’s suddenly labeled manipulative or weird. You may not like it, but Aaron is 35 and I think he’s perfectly capable of standing by his choice of life partner.

@JustBWilde @MENin4K There is a difference between what is a legal matter and what just doesn’t seem appropriate. There are power dynamics that come from one person being a teenager and one in their 40s. Were it an 18yo woman with a man in their 40s it would have received even more negativity

@YoshiJoshi_ @MENin4K Yeah, but 18 is simply the legal age of adulthood, and that comes with the freedom to make your own decisions. It may be unusual, but it’s their life, and apparently a very good one if he’s been with her for that long. How many people can say that about their relationship?

@MENin4K Until now, I didn't know he had an older wife. But I'm sure that if the age difference were reversed, everyone would think she was a gold digger. Sometimes it's just that simple: he might just love her, and the age difference might not bother him...
