This past weekend stirred deep emotions within me. As an #Eritrean, I found myself glued to Eritrean television, shedding tears of joy, pride, and quiet reflection; longing from afar yet filled with reverence for the profound significance this moment holds for our beloved nation. On one side of the world, two of our internationally acclaimed cyclists, Biniam Girmay and Henok Mulubrhan, raced with brilliance and defiance on the global stage. Their victories were more than sporting triumphs; they were a personification of the #Eritrean spirit and identity. Embodying excellence, discipline, and national pride, they continue to inspire generations at home and across the diaspora. Meanwhile, back in Eritrea, the country radiated with vitality and promise. Across our colleges, hundreds of young men and women graduated with degrees in diverse disciplines. Each one stepped forward not only with a certificate in hand, but with a solemn duty in heart, to contribute, to build, and to carry forward the vision of a self-reliant Eritrea. Yet, among all these milestones this past week, one stood apart in its depth, symbolism, and national soul: the 37th Round of #Sawa Graduation. In the searing desert plains of #Sawa, where the sun once bore silent witness to clandestine meetings, sacrifice, and the determined footsteps of #Eritrea|s beloved freedom fighters, under the vast and boundless Eritrean sky, a profound and enduring tradition unfolded once more. Once a rugged frontier at the margins of our liberation struggle, Sawa was not chosen for comfort, but for its symbolism. It stood, and still stands, as a place where resolve is tested, distractions fall away, and only purpose remains. During the armed struggle, the terrain was unforgiving, yet it nurtured resilience. It was here that early visions of post-independence #Eritrea were whispered under starlit skies and traced in the sand by weary but hopeful hands...echoed eternally in poems and songs across generations. In the decades that followed, #Sawa was reborn, not as a battlefield, but as a foundation for nation-building. It became the physical and moral training ground where the dreams of the fallen would take root in the hearts of the living. Where yesterday’s freedom fighters once trained in defiance of colonial and foreign aggression, today’s youth gather in service to peace, unity, and self-reliance. What was once an outpost of resistance is now a sanctuary of national consciousness. Over time, #Sawa has transformed into a living institution, ever evolving yet grounded in timeless principles: discipline, solidarity, and the sacred responsibility of preserving the hard-won sovereignty of a young nation. In its open fields and disciplined rhythms, Sawa calls forth the best of Eritrea’s youth, not only to serve, but to remember. To remember that nationhood was not inherited but earned; that unity is not given, but forged; and that every generation must answer the call to preserve and renew. The 37th Round of Graduation is not merely the continuation of a program; it is the latest verse in a national epic. A story written in the heat and dust of Sawa, in the sweat of the young, and in the unbroken presence of a leader who has stood by them every step of the way. President Isaias Afwerki once again stood at the center of this sacred rite, just as he has for 37 consecutive rounds (correct me if I am wrong on this count). For nearly four decades, he has attended each #Sawa graduation not as a distant head of state, but as a father figure, mentor, and torchbearer of #Eritrea|s sovereign path. His steadfast engagement with #Sawa reflects more than duty, it is a defining pillar of leadership, rooted in principle and guided by generational purpose. With each address, rich with profound insight, he offers wisdom forged in struggle. With each visit, he reminds us that the youth are not passengers in #Eritrea|s journey...they are its very engine. In Sawa, where discipline is forged and character tested, the President continues to guide, inspire, and bear witness to a generation stepping into its historical role. His words are more than aspirational; they are a mirror to our national journey, and a challenge to every young #Eritrean: to live with integrity, purpose, and service at the core of their identity. And yet, there are those who seek to distort this legacy. Whether from ignorance or malice, some attempt to malign this deeply held national ritual, reducing it to mere regimentation, denying its transformative value, and erasing its role in forging a resilient and unified citizenry...where the culture of peaceful and harmonious co-existence, of ethnic and religious respect and tolerance that define #Eritrea|n society, is strengthened They overlook the reality that Sawa is not only a space of discipline and service, but a crucible where the culture of peaceful coexistence, interethnic harmony, and religious respect that define #Eritrea|n society is nurtured and strengthened. It is where the threads of our diverse heritage are woven into a single national fabric, each strand adding strength, color, and meaning to the story of #Eritrea. The 37th Round is not simply a milestone. It is a living embodiment of #Eritrea|s core values: sacrifice, sovereignty, unity, and endurance. Each graduate carries forward the legacy of our martyrs and the hopes of our people. Their path is lit by trust, born of experience, tested through hardship, and nurtured in the lineage of those who built a nation from sacrifice. Best wishes to members of the 38th round...

Are we truly embodying these principles in the diaspora, namely the US? Do we fully grasp our responsibilities within them? The reality is, I see no deliberate dedication toward this path. Instead, our community remains perpetually sidetracked by knee-jerk responses to fleeting events and irrelevant agendas that hold little weight in the broader perspective.#Eritrea

Beyond the Resource Curse: #Eritrea’s Holistic Approach to Development; by Bana Negusse *"...Since gaining independence, Eritrea has emphasized a holistic, multifaceted approach to development. From the outset, the country’s leadership has been keenly aware of the dangers posed by mismanaged resource wealth, with the failures of other resource-endowed nations serving as cautionary tales". *"...Eritrea’s national development strategy prioritizes the rehabilitation and construction of infrastructure, enhancement of agricultural productivity, promotion of private investment and exports, investment in health and education, environmental protection, and grassroots community mobilization. At the heart of this strategy is a strong emphasis on people. As outlined on various occasions, “the Eritrean government’s policy is and has always been firmly centred on investing in human capital and youth, which are, without question, our most important resource and greatest asset.” Within this broader framework, natural resources are treated as a single component in a larger, interconnected development agenda – not a silver bullet". shabait.com/2025/07/10/bey…

For a small & resilient nation, the precious price paid to secure national independence & later defend hard-won sovereignty have been huge & unparalleled indeed. For Eritrea's best sons & daughters, the minimum their country can do is to extend meaningful succor to their families

We already have a #Martyrsday in #Eritrea. But on #IndependenceDay it's hard not to first lift up those who have fallen first. God bless our Heros and their families who sacrificed everything. God bless those who still fight for Eritrea. God bless Eritrea. #AwetNHafash✊🏾✊🏽✊🏿✊🏼

Peace is priceless to Eritrea, Ethiopia & the region as a whole which has suffered most from intra-State & inter-State conflicts in past decades. Genuine public euphoria in Eritrea & Ethiopia when Peace Agreement was signed in July 2018 was eloquent testimony to this reality

US State Department's Annual Report on Human Rights - Section on Eritrea - is essentially catalogue of smear campaigns peddled by Eritrea's detractors. At a more substantive level, no country - including the US - has moral high ground to issue HR bill of health of other countries

The venomous & hateful speech made by Martin Plaut & Alex De Waal against #Eritreans in a webinar today was quite a spectacle. Amongst the hate speech, De Waal went as far as warning #Ethiopians will go back to the 80s known for starvation after #TPLF , #Ethiopia #EritreaPrevails
