@Danishova @AndrewTWalker I think this would be convincing if it weren’t for the fact that common good proponents themselves admit that there is no way to totally understand what “common good” means, instead referring to “thick” and “thin” conceptions of it.

I am not going to comment on the merits of the lengthy New York Times Magazine piece on Heritage. But one observation in the article seems to helpfully capture the entire "fight on the right" as a fundamental, zero-sum dispute: whether there is such a thing as the "common good"—and, if so, what its substance and scope are. How you approach the common good will tell you where you are on today's conservative spectrum. The thicker one's conception of the common good, the more one will migrate toward a politics that focuses less on individual autonomy and more on the intrinsic goods necessary for social flourishing.

I see people dunking on this but like look around. To like 98% of people this is the dream. The podcast circuit is dominated by ceos, opportunists, stolen valor pillheads, rise and grind vampires, war criminals, the cia, and military contractors. We shouldn’t know who most of these people are. It shouldn’t matter who the new autonomous drone manufacturer ceo is but these are the things people aspire to be when the only thing left is rape. It’s a rape economy. There’s no art but there’s lots of raping and killing and bombing. Everyone wants to be like Kevin OLeary and hold the shiny object and weep. Not because it’s beautiful but because all the good in our world was sacrificed for it. And now there’s nothing left

It genuinely terrifies me that so many people did not actually listen to the movie The Odyssey. A lot of people are pissed that Odysseus didn’t just go left and into the open ocean during the whirlpool and six-headed monster scene. There is no open ocean option. Scylla and Charybdis sit on opposite sides of a narrow strait. The only way through is between them. Circe (and the prophecy) makes the choice brutally clear: sail closer to the six-headed monster and lose six men, or drift toward the whirlpool and lose the entire ship and everyone on it. That is the only choice that exists. Odysseus picks the lesser loss. He has to go through the canyon with Scylla because the alternative is total destruction. The Whirlpool was inescapable, even if they steered extremely hard left. The whirlpool would’ve just followed. People acting like he could have just steered away and avoided both completely missed the entire point of the scene.

This garbage about Thomas Jefferson needs to STOP. In 2001, The Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society Scholars Commission explored many of the bogus arguments seen over the years about Jefferson's alleged paternity of Sally's children. All are dismissed. “After a careful review of all of the evidence, the commission agrees unanimously the allegation is by no means proven; and we find it regrettable that public confusion about the 1998 DNA testing and other evidence has misled many people.”

This piece at Salon regurgitates the lie that all of Sally Hemings children were sired by Thomas Jefferson. The DNA evidence never proved Jefferson was the father, only a possibility. And as Mark Holowchak explains in the video, the possibility is remote. salon.com/2026/07/27/mee…

Hot take (gained from reading criminal law and procedure appellate opinions): we spend way too much money and time incarcerating non-dangerous 65+ year olds rather than paroling them, while under-incarcerating 25 year old repeat offenders who are quite dangerous.
