The Assad regime will go down in history as one of the ugliest, bloodiest and most brutal regimes ever known. The post-Assad era is unknown. Everything is possible. But this is a truly historic moment of freedom that is worth celebrating, big time, regardless of what comes next

If you lived in Syria, you would know this is such an incredible moment. Try to think of Syrians as human beings, instead of geopolitics, just for a second. Imagine how people are feeling as their disappeared loved ones are being found in prisons, alive.

Saydnaya. The human slaughterhouse. Where thousands of Syrians were tortured, raped, and executed—en masse. Today is the last day any Syrian will remain trapped in its horrific dungeons.

Crossing North of Wadi Gaza yesterday. More “postcards” of destruction. Carts left behind loaded with belongings against the wreckage. The items that carry memories are long under the rubble. Horrific stories from northern Gaza of the sick and injured, the herding of men on their knees. Considered lucky if they were wearing underwear when forced to strip and put on white PPE. Their fate cut off from the world. Little boys walking down through the checkpoint South with their hands up, marching forward. A woman sitting alone defeated with her possessions, submitting to the exhaustion. People forced away from bombardment and siege, arriving to more bombardment and siege. Another chapter of their painful journey begins. Forced to flee towards civilians who are running away from naval gunfire. A little boy telling us that someone has been killed on the sand. Forced towards no safety. No shelter. To hungry people running down sandy roads with empty pots. To the slow violence exposed through the stories of the miscarriages and the malnourished amputees, unable to heal on bread alone. Life against all odds. #Gaza #CeasefireNOW

No. Biden lacks any conscience and he does not think Arabs are human. His entire career shows he uses black people at home for his political interests and abroad as fodder for US imperialism. Look at his record on Afghanistan & Iraq. He is an Andrew Jackson type! @Megankstack

Biden is politically unfettered. The election is over, Trump won, he’s elderly and a lame duck. He can do whatever he wants. If he had any humanitarian impulse toward Palestinians, he would do everything in his considerable power to save lives.

@SanaSaeed @LastWeekTonight I also agree that liberals will only care and protest if it's trump doing it and will otherwise fall asleep for 4 years so in that case it is strategically better to have a trump presidency....

In the QT’d monologue, @LastWeekTonight trots out the whole ‘Trump will repress protests, says he’ll finish the job in Gaza & deport protestors’. Just a quick check in: - Violent repression of Palestine protests - especially encampments - took place across this country, in Democrat-led cities with Dems in the White House supporting the repression (ie Biden et al calling them antisemitic). - A black Muslim British student, at Cornell, is facing deportation because of his involvement in campus protests - North Gaza is being entirely exterminated, right now. 300k Palestinians are being exterminated right now and no one is saying anything. Whatever evil and repression Trump will bring will be because of the evil and repression wrought by the Democrats. They created the new “normal” of genocide, ending international law & repression of protestors.

Polls suggest a majority of American Muslims will be voting for @DrJillStein. But that wont stop liberals from trotting out the @Ruwa4Georgia to assuage their guilt.

@SanaSaeed @LastWeekTonight Def agree if we're thinking of voting in terms of a moral act. In terms of strategy for continuing to mobilize against genocide, empire etc, I feel conflicted because I do expect Republicans will more overtly suppress protest etc, but....

@SanaSaeed @LastWeekTonight Like just looking at higher education eg, our colleagues in a number of red states are already much more restricted, intimidated etc...positions are more tenuous, what they can teach, etc...

@SanaSaeed @LastWeekTonight I agree with your conclusion here Sana, and the Dems are rotten to the core. But I have a genuine question wanted your thoughts on (was thinking about listening to Zahra Biloo make the same point):

@SanaSaeed @LastWeekTonight while yes this all happened under Dem leadership, states, institutions, does that negate that it could get much worse? I don't think we should kid ourselves that such repression and suppression of our mobilization could get much much worse...what's the calculus then in that case?

It was child sex abuse. Say the words. How will you center the survivor? What will you do to investigate your entire organization for such evils? How will you offer care to others- who may have suffered similarly due to your negligence? I never liked this organization.

From 2021 so some things have changed a bit, and the overall analysis is nothing new of course... but the narrative about Sartre was new to me, and quite telling and interesting. currentaffairs.org/news/2021/06/j…

Very nice bibliographic essay by Ta-Nehisi Coates discussing the sources that informed his thinking on Palestine, Israel, and Zionism in his new book. Not just helpful references but very interesting reflections. ta-nehisicoates.com/blog/notes-on-…

“According to senior defense officials, the Israeli government is not seeking to revive hostage talks and the political leadership is pushing for the gradual annexation of large parts of the Gaza Strip.” In case you thought there wasn’t a strategy. haaretz.com/israel-news/20…

I just watched a horrifying video of a Palestinian man, attached to an IV, flames engulfing him, being burned alive. Israel bombed tents full of displaced people in Deir Al Balah in Gaza. Have you seen this video? Do you think you’ll hear about in the US media?

There is complete extermination in north Gaza as Israel has laid siege. Two journalists have been killed, three badly injured (one rendered entirely paralyzed) as Israel tries to ensure they can’t get information out. And no coverage in U.S. news media. None. Shame on every single newsroom, every silent journalist. And shame on every person in this country who still doesn’t get that these bullets and bombs ripping Palestinian bodies apart are *ours*. We made them, we paid for them & we defend their use.
حسام شبات@HossamShabat

We are unable to count the number of massacres happening in Jabalia, and ambulances are unable to reach the calls due to the fuel shortage in northern Gaza.
