Israel is hellbent on taking N. Gaza. The IDF burns, destroys, and razes every building after pushing out the Palestinians it does not kill or bury inside the rubble. No war crime like it has occurred anywhere since WW2. And the US-EU look on... theguardian.com/world/2024/nov…

@sherwang Very nice! PPI is new to me. But looks like it offers no real advantage over Olofsson method for land change area estimation, which will almost always require strat rnd sample as opposed to simple rnd sample. So the map strata are necessary.

Remote sensing maps need uncertainty quantification to ensure they can be used reliably for science & policy. Excited to share our preprint on methods to correct map biases and quantify errors, bridging the gap between map creation and use: arxiv.org/abs/2407.13659  🗺❓🧵 1/n

Never felt so ethically conflicted when considering journals for my paper. It is mind-boggling that the article processing charge costs as much as a Macbook Pro. Scientific publishing industry is exploitative and broken. Shame on you @NaturePortfolio

I recorded nearly every* breastfeeding session with my older daughter over 1.5 years. Mostly so I could someday make some charts. Yay charts! *I only missed a very small handful of feeds!

@Geethen1 @Exopixelist OK nice! I didn't see that. I wonder if the image collection feeding that app will be continuously updated?

Postdocs are already the most exploited segment in the academic system, but this great article lays bare how harsh the reality can be in Africa. The figure on pay disparity is jarring. Is the knowledge created by African scientists really worth 5-10x less than their US colleagues
Linda Nordling@lindanordling

I wrote at length about postdoctoral employment in Africa. The article draws on a survey @Nature did last year, but also interviews with postdocs and employers around the continent. Here's a thread of some of the findings: (1/n) nature.com/articles/d4158…

New study - using methods that appropriately recognise uncertainty, the authors could not find a single increasing or decreasing trend in 10 major biodiversity datasets They say this emphasises how little is known about biodiversity change at large scales nature.com/articles/s4158…

This does not mean that biodiversity is not declining, simply the uncertainty is too high to detect trends in biodiversity, and for a whole bunch of reasons that’s actually not too surprising - we discuss this in the #OA paper.

For those who check model assumptions (you ALL should), the {easystats} package makes it very easy to do this with various models but particularly regression models

@donaldmcknight2 I guess I have only tried twice and been successful both times. Would be nice to see some stats on this. But journals have a strong incentive not to let anyone know this is even a possibility 😅

@ZanderVenter6 Fascinating. I wonder how often that works. I've had journals deny my request for a waiver before.

I was considering submitting a paper to Nature Ecology and Evolution, then I saw that the open access fee was 12 THOUSAND dollars! What the actual crap!? I can do a lot of research for 12k. Charging authors 12 grand to publish THEIR OWN work is the craziest nonsense imaginable

Weird getting an email with a $10K bill for a journal publication fee, followed by an email requesting to review a paper for the same journal for free. Feels like being a victim in some kind of a pyramid scheme
