@levantophile If being disenchanted is the price of grounding your beliefs in actual reality rather than rigid ideological fantasies, I'd say it's worth it

Rania’s late father belonged to a generation of Druze romantics who came of age before the 1960s. In a sense, they were our equivalent of the hippie or “soixante-huitard” generation. This was an eclectic bunch that adhered to different ideologies. Most, including Rania’s father, were Syrian nationalists, typically supporters of the SSNP. (In fact, the Abdul Khalek clan was traditionally one of the more SSNP-leaning among the large Druze families in Lebanon.) Others were Arab nationalists or communists, and a few even took an Islamist turn. What mattered less was the specific ideology than the underlying impulse that animated them. Theirs was a desire to transcend the confines of a small, largely tribal religious community and merge into a larger collective identity, whether Syrian, Arab, or proletarian. Interestingly, though, it seems that many of them understood, at some level, that this was an illusion. Very few took the aspiration to its logical conclusion by marrying outside the Druze community. Most kept a foot in their own group, perhaps as a form of security, treating it as a kind of fortress to retreat to should these broader projects of transcendence ever fail. Much can be said about that group - and they were, indeed, often naive and out of step with reality - but it is hard not to feel a certain sense of loss at their passing. What is fading now is not only a generation, but also the very spirit of political romanticism. We live today in a far more disenchanted, even cynical, age than theirs.

My Dad just died. He was older than the state of “Israel.” And he fought until the very end. He made me who I am. And I am writing this post to celebrate that. open.substack.com/pub/raniakhale…

You'd think she'd bring up a nice memory of their moments together But no. Israel derangement syndrome had to take over I'd feel deeply insulted if I died and my kids immediately made it all about my anti-Hezbollah stances

Israel is planning to steal $40 billion gas field in Lebanese waters. Sorry, I meant self-defense themselves into $40 billion. In order to do that, they’re going to destroy 70 villages, including three Christian ones. No one in our government cares. In fact, we’re funding this.
Ahmad Baydoun@weatherwar

Mapped the IDF's newly declared "Forward Defense Zone" in south Lebanon. Its maritime boundary fully absorbs Lebanon's Qana gas field, whose exploration rights were explicitly guaranteed under the 2022 US-brokered maritime border agreement. More maps in this thread 🧵

@Rothmus ✡️🇮🇱🕎Now can we make 'Israel' replace the Talmud for denigrating, defaming, distorting, desecrating, debasing, and demonizing Jesus and his blessed mother and jail the rabbis? Asking for a friend.

**Fact check: False.** Israel's IDF "Forward Defense Line" / buffer zone in southern Lebanon (per the map and recent IDF statements) covers roughly 600–700 km²—about 5–7% of Lebanon's total area. Russia occupies ~118,000 km² of Ukraine (19–20% of Ukraine's territory), per ISW, Belfer Center, and Wikipedia data as of early 2026. Russia controls ~170× more land in Ukraine than Israel does in Lebanon. The absolute areas aren't close.
