After awarding Palestinian journalist Maha Hussaini (@MahaGaza) the Courage in Journalism Award for her reporting amidst Israel's war on Gaza, @IWMF cancelled the award, seemingly yielding to Israeli pressure This is shameful and contributes to the silencing of journalists!
Maha Hussaini@MahaGaza

I wouldn't have won The International Women's Media Foundation (@IWMF)'s Courage in Journalism Award 2024 this June if I hadn’t been on the ground reporting events and exposing Israeli flagrant violations under perilous conditions, all while being systematically attacked by supporters of the perpetrators. Winning a prize for “courage” means being subjected to attacks and choosing to continue your work regardless. However, I regret to say that the very organization that recognized these perilous conditions and awarded me the prize succumbed to pressure and chose to act contrary to courage; they rescinded the award in a decision that would put my life at risk. In fact, I’m very glad that both my winning the award and its withdrawal have starkly demonstrated the systematic physical and moral attacks Palestinian journalists endure throughout their careers. These threats and character assassinations aim only to silence us and perpetuate the longstanding bias in global media. I have never worked to receive awards, nor have I ever submitted an application to nominate myself. I didn't choose journalism as a profession; I became a journalist after recognizing the extent to which the world overlooks Palestinians’ suffering and opts to conform to Israeli pressures. Every year, Palestinian journalists are recognized with international awards for their brave reporting under the Israeli occupation and relentless attacks. These accolades honor their courage and dedication to uncovering the truth. However, each announcement of an award to a Palestinian journalist is systematically followed by extensive smearing campaigns and intense pressure on the awarding organizations from supporters of the Israeli occupation and the Zionist lobby. While some organizations uphold their principles and maintain their decision to honor these journalists, others, regrettably, cave to the pressure and withdraw the prizes. Instead of recognizing the threats they face and contributing to their protection, a decision to withdraw a prize from a Palestinian journalist in Gaza—where over 150 journalists have been killed by the ongoing Israeli genocide—can further endanger them and increase their risk of targeting. I have no regrets about any posts or reasons that led to the rescinding of this award, and I will not stop expressing my views. Before being a journalist, I am a Palestinian living under military occupation, a strangling blockade, and genocide in Gaza. My grandparents were expelled from Jerusalem upon the creation of the state of Israel, and I have been expelled from my home in Gaza during this genocide. If winning a prize entails enduring and witnessing war crimes while remaining silent, I am not honored to receive any prizes. I will always be objective in my reporting, but I can never be neutral; I will always point out the perpetrators and stand in solidarity with the victims. This is what journalism is truly about.

Thousands of people have been killed in the “safe humanitarian zone” of Rafah since October. It’s a policy. There are no “incidents” in a war of annihilation.

Let's be clear. As the ICJ orders Israel to stop its offensive in Rafah, Israel intensifies its attacks on it. The news I am receiving from the people trapped therein are terrifying. Be sure: Israel will not stop this madness until WE make it stop. Member states must impose #sanctions, arms embargo and suspend diplo/political relations with Israel till it ceases its assault.

📃ICJ Orders #Israel to “Immediately Halt its Military Offensive”: International Community Must Ensure Israel’s Compliance With All Provisional Measures Orders @AlMezanCenter , @alhaq_org , and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) welcome the new provisional measures orderissued today by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the #Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel). This new order instructs Israel to, inter alia, “[i]mmediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah Governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part”, and “[m]aintain open the #Rafah crossing for unhindered provision at scale of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance”.  Click here to read the full statement👇 🔗tinyurl.com/2ft57s8h #AllEyesOnRafah #CeasefireNow #Gaza_in_Genocide #GazaGenocid #StopArmingIsrael #EndIsraeliImpuntity #Jabaliya

More horror in the #GazaGhetto. The Israeli occupation forces have bombed a camp for displaced Palestinians in #Rafah, causing plastic tents to catch fire and tragically burning people alive. This cruelty, along with blatant defiance of the int'l law and system, is unacceptable. The #GazaGenocide‌ will not easily end without external pressure: Israel must face sanctions, justice, suspension of agreements, trade, partnership and investments, as well as participation in int'l forums.

Horrible scenes of a new massacre in Rafah: The Israeli army committed a horrific massacre in North West Rafah which is supposed to be a safe area bombarding and burning tents of displaced Palestinians killing more than 30 civilians many of whom were burned to death and injuring many others.

Update from Gaza: Following an Israeli air strike that hit a camp for displaced people tonight in Tal Al Sultan, Rafah, Gaza, dozens of wounded and more than 15 dead people were brought to the trauma stabilization point that we support.

We are horrified by this deadly event, which shows once again that nowhere is safe. We continue to call for an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza. #CeasefireNow

There is no other way to say this: the (lack of) reaction to the scenes of sheer carnage, burned refugee bodies, and decapitated babies coming out of Rafah tonight from the U.S. political and media establishments is nothing other than the normalizing, the banalizing, of genocide.

This was just 2 days ago. Tonight Israel appears to have answered by bombing, eviscerating parts of West Rafah where displaced people were sheltering in tents. Aid groups say at least 50 charred bodies recovered so far, children, women burned alive. Every red line crossed.

These monsters manufacture the Quadcopter drone with a sniper gun. One night we had 30 injuries when they were sent to shoot at people trying to get to Ahli hospital. One was a 9 year boy shot in the neck. He bled-out in the ER. Germany hasn't banned them from Europe
