Apparently @mkcouncil and I have very different ideas about what constitutes making safe a damaged bit of mains electrical kit in a public place. Apparently throwing some of the cheapest packing tape they could find at it and hoping it would stick is fine. Work complete they say!

Communism, meet capitalism. What better car than the Trabant to take to Costco?

@MorganEarp12 I've never quite understood the need of so many people to decide that just because something is basic that it must be bad. The Trabant did exactly what it was designed to do, and did it quite well. It just looked laughably obsolete by the time the design was 30 years old.

Wild that there was a couple decades where all American cars had interiors like these

@muIIigrubs I concentrated mainly on the vehicles themselves, especially the last iteration that arrived in the early 70s, but I do go into the history of the scheme to at least some extent on the page I've put together detailing my restoration of one of the cars. zelandeth.org/cars/ac-model-…

This is the Invacar. The Invacar was a three-wheeled motor vehicle. It was issued to people with a physical disability by the Ministry of Health & Social Security from just after World War Two up until 1981. I'd love to learn more about this scheme if anyone knows anything!

I still can't quite wrap my head around the fact that this car was launched 60 years ago (okay, slightly less for the facelifted version). The design doesn't look half as dated as many half it's age. Also absolutely does not feel anywhere near it's age from the driver's seat.

Me approximately an hour ago: "Hmm. I should make a point of replacing that Rifa cap before I do much with this." Ten minutes ago: *BANG!* - Desk disappears in a cloud of smoke. Great. Now my room smells of immolated capacitor innards. Rookie mistake.

@buckygatox The tail air-guitar during that solo that was playing nearly broke me. It was both hilarious and brilliant. Just glad I managed to grab the camera quick enough to capture that moment.

I am officially in the market for a replacement engine for my Trabant. Or if it's cheap enough, a good core to rebuild. This one has damage to basically everything aside from the external components. Anyone in the UK got one available they'd be willing to part with?

@SpringFord14 Nah, you'd lose so much of the character of the car. I've never found screaming high rev engines like that to hold much attraction for me. Sure they're fun on a track, but doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy living with day to day. Don't think I'm really the target audience!

@cjshields84 It's managed 40 years and 136K km, which for a little 600cc air cooled two stroke which clearly hasn't ever seen a particularly easy life doesn't seem bad to me. I can readily get all the bits from Germany, just seems sensible to scope out local options first.

@Zelandeth I didn't think Trabant engines were particularly robust in the first place, couple that with owners who had to maintain their own engines, I'm not surprised it's as damaged as it is. Hopefully you find someone with a better engine or alternatively, do an Invacar engine swap.

Well I have successfully un-broken what I messed up yesterday, so the Rover has oil pressure again. On the plus side, I've now made a priming tool so that's in the tool box for next time I accidentally de-prime the oil pump. Sadly the leak still needs sorting!

Well this would indeed explain the Unhappy Noises which resulted in my Trabant failing to make it to ConFuzzled. Now to try to figure out where these bits of metal came from, and if they have other friends waiting to cause more mayhem.
