Today, we're introducing SimFoundry, our real2sim2real framework at NVIDIA GEAR that automatically turns real-world scenes into simulation-ready worlds from a single image or video. Website: research.nvidia.com/labs/gear/simf… Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2606.28276 This work marks a major step for our team toward leveraging simulations and synthetic data for foundation model training and systematic policy evaluation at scale. Code will be open-sourced soon. Stay tuned!

Is there a standardised real-world benchmark yet for robotics research? If not - what does it take to create one that researchers will actually adopt?

I’ve been wrestling with the same especially when I hear more traditional robotics companies argue for this data flywheel. In the industrial space in particular, you cannot deploy until you prove reliability. By definition, your models are either already robust with not much to learn post-deployment, or your customers are going to be terribly disappointed. If your model is good and you want to collect data to train a teacher policy, video feeds of the robot doing the same task over and over will not do you much good without the variability Kyle argues for. While things like lighting changes and background distractors could be novel, that pure visual signal is exactly the kind of data that is easy to simulate / generate now. If your model is bad at deployment, live teleop for rescue is not always an option because of IP and IT concerns, and even if it weren’t, the factory is still counting downtime that you’re on the hook for. Data diversity in industrials must therefore come pre-deployment, to the benefit of both the customer and the model.
Kyle Vedder@KyleVedder

opinion piece: cargo cults, data flywheels, and novelty pumps tl;dr: “deployment data flywheels” miss that scale should provide novelty, and deploying robots on a known task wrings most novelty out of its generated data your ops team’s novelty pump is the only way out 🔗👇

I want to believe him, but it isn't publicly available information how many houses they've cleaned, and I do find it hard to believe I'm being given breaking news by a founder here on Twitter. @joinshift (terrible handle by the way) is pushing a lot of influencer content in my feed and it was an interesting idea to me at first, but now I'm getting annoyed a little bit. Would be open to consulting with them, but as I noted in this thread here, they appear to be affluent and fortunate, privileged founders whose risk profile is basically non-existent. So the idea can suck, fail, and still be presented as a financial success later.

No surveillance, it’s purely to record hand object interactions to teach a robot to do these actions too in the future. All data is fully anonymized, faces blurred, text/IDs/sensitive documents censored and no accurate location is saved. We have many more privacy measures, but I’ll keep the comment short.

@Polymarket Trading a messy apartment for absolute surveillance is the most dystopian way to pay rent yet, but broke New Yorkers will definitely line up for it.
