Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975. By the time it went public in 1986 he was 30 years old and owned 45% of the company. Microsoft grew by doing one thing ruthlessly. It made sure every computer on earth needed its software to function. Netscape, the dominant browser at the time, was wiped out by Internet Explorer. Microsoft bundled it into Windows for free and made it nearly impossible to use anything else. Microsoft threatened IBM with higher Windows licensing fees if IBM kept developing competing software. IBM caved and lost hundreds of MILLIONS. In 1998 the DOJ had seen enough. They filed a sweeping antitrust lawsuit alongside 20 state attorneys general. Gates was deposed on camera. The footage was played in court. He came across as arrogant, evasive and moody. Two months later he stepped down as CEO. On November 5, 1999, Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ruled that Microsoft was an unlawful monopoly. Seven months later he ordered the company to be split into two separate businesses. Microsoft's stock collapsed. Then the judge made one mistake. He spoke to reporters off the record about Microsoft and his views on the company while the case was still active. On appeal in 2001, the breakup order was thrown out. The judge was found guilty of serious judicial misconduct and removed from the case entirely. A new judge took over. Microsoft settled. Minor changes. No fines. No breakup. Microsoft was 7 months from being broken in two. They ended up worth more than the entire US stock market was when the case began.
