I urge European institutions to closely monitor developments in Slovenia ahead of the March 22 elections. Today is February 13 and just six days before the official start of the election campaign. In this critical pre-election period, the ruling party Gibanje Svoboda (Renew Europe) and Prime Minister Robert Golob are using state institutions to target the parliamentary opposition and exert pressure on critical media. Yesterday, an investigative program, “Tarča”, on Slovenia’s main public broadcaster (TVS1) was cancelled before airing. The editorial team stated they were informed that the episode would not be broadcast and received a written warning about possible action against them if it aired as prepared. At the same time, police and prosecution proceedings are being initiated against opposition figures just weeks before the elections. The cancellation of investigative journalism on public television and the use of state institutions against political opponents in the pre-election period represent a serious threat to media freedom, institutional independence, and democratic standards in an EU member state.
