The most egregious charging decision is against 51-year-old Willie Hill, Jr., who fatally shot a man who opened fire at him back in early February. Prosecutors aren't charging him for the homicide. They admit the evidence corroborates Hill's self-defense claim and agree his actions appear to be justified. Instead, they're charging him with criminal possession of a firearm (basically, having an unregistered gun) and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon (basically, having a loaded gun in public without a carry license). The former is a Class E felony for which Hill faces up to 4 years in prison. The latter? A more serious Class C "violent" felony for which he faces a mandatory minimum of 3.5 years in prison (up to 15 years max). It doesn't appear that Hill was a prohibited person. He just...hadn't jumped through the extraordinary financial and practical hoops New York still requires to beg the government's permission to exercise your Second Amendment rights. syracuse.com/crime/2026/02/…
