#MpofuChimombeFatalMistake This is the letter that got Moses Mpofu and Mike Chimombe into jail for 15 years and 12 years respectively. While they are jailed for a criminal offence, involving fraud and corruption, their case had serious political undertones which they failed to pick or take seriously, making a fatal mistake in the process. The NewsHawks has the inside story and the insight of what transpired from start to finish.

#Zim@44 LISTEN to a younger ED, Simba Makoni, Eddie Cross & others explain the dilemma of independent Frontline States having to deal with aparthied South Africa, which wanted them to choke economically & increase their dependency on the Boer-run country. The Beira Corridor was & remains to this day a critical trade route for Zim & other countries in the hinterland of Africa.

The PROBLEM is misdiagnosis! Associating local currency with fuel queues is completely wrong, more so coming from the @ReserveBankZIM Governor. That’s a dangerous gaffe! x.com/newswirezw/sta… At one point @MthuliNcube01 & Mangudya banned Ecocash agents, they also banned PPC & Old Mutual from the ZSE blaming them for manipulating the currency… Up to now PPC & Old Mutual are still banned from the ZSE yet the Zim$ kept depreciating. Zim authorities are always misdiagnosing the currency problems & blaming fictitious saboteurs YET the problem is coming from BAD POLICIES. It’s self destructive to make the ZiG a part time currency that can’t buy fuel or pay for passports or any other product or service… that’s clearly undermining the currency and it’s utterly shameful when done by the same people who introduced the currency. What’s the problem then??? The issue of fuel queues AND any other queues arising in the market is due to a HEAVILY/WRONGLY CONTROLLED market. Because of the flawed exchange rate from the RBZ auction, selling fuel in Zim$ became unattractive, that’s all. The Problem was the FLAWED exchange rate which made the price set by @zeraenergy to be ridiculously low. Instead of floating the currency fully to establish its market exchange rate, the govt chose to have US$ only fuel. That was a HUGE mistake. As long the ZiG exchange rate is also flawed, no one will be interested in selling fuel using that exchange rate. How can we get ZiG fuel then??? This requires open minded bureaucrats & Ministers, something that Mthuli Ncube & @GGuvamatanga have FAILED to provide. They have joined the “saboteur bandwagon” For a start: Zimbabweans are buying EXPENSIVE FOREX at the black market to go buy fuel… WHY can’t @ZimTreasury & @zeraenergy allow fuel companies to use an exchange rate of their choice for fuel? Instead of ZERA dictating the ZiG fuel price, they can just provide the US$ fuel price & let the fuel companies choose an exchange rate to use for ZiG fuel. This will work because the issue is a FLAWED EXCHANGE rate that gives a FLAWED FUEL PRICE …. It’s not about the currency, it’s about the PRICE!! Why do I say it’s about the price??? Well, fuel is imported but it’s not the only imported product in Zimbabwe. Supermarkets are packed with imported products that they are selling in ZiG. However, unlike fuel, the supermarkets use ZiG prices of their choice. This should be the same approach to fuel. So what must govt do????? Govt must make it mandatory for fuel companies to sell fuel in ZiG but allow them to use a price of their choice (this essentially means using an exchange rate of their choice). The competition in the fuel sector will rationalise the ZiG price in the end…. Govt doesn’t have to interfere with the market it in this case. This policy has to be applied throughout the market. There is no need to link ZiG prices to the US$, businesses must charge what they want in both currencies and people choose what to pay with. The US$ itself is always fluctuating against other currencies but we don’t see any other country tracking the exchange rate to price EVERY product/service in the market. That’s abnormal, unnecessary, & impractical - it has to stop.

@matigary This is the inconvenient truth that most would want to ignore, but its a fact: the worst curse to visit Zimbabwe was the establishment of MDC in 1999. Everything went downhill from that moment onwards

@bmusonza A comprehensive public transport upgrade is essential. Those electric trolley buses are a cheaper quicker & more manageable option than metro lines. The power grid can then be used for trams in a later upgrade. They need to get the cities moving.
