From the ruins of Pompeii, a touching wall painting showing Terentius Neo and his wife. 55-79 AD. A lovely young couple, I very much hope they escaped the eruption! Terentius, a baker, holds a scroll. His wife holds a wax writing tablet, and raises a stylus pen thoughtfully to her lips. The intellectual pose and use of writing implements in this fresco, identify them as equals and members of the literate middle class.
