Clinical impact of double-faecal immunochemical testing following implementation into standard triage and investigation of primary care referrals in patients with lower gastrointestinal symptoms ➡️doi.org/10.1093/bjsope… A double-faecal immunochemical testing pathway was implemented in secondary care for all patients with symptoms suspicious for colorectal cancer. There were very good return rates of tests, and the workload of colorectal investigations fell as a result of reassurance and watch and wait for double-negative tests. Risk factors and clinical consequences of interval cancers arising within faecal immunochemical testing-based colorectal cancer screening programme ➡️doi.org/10.1093/bjsope… Bowel cancer screening uses an initial faecal immunochemical test (FIT) with a positivity threshold set so that the colonoscopy workload generated is manageable. For people with negative bowel screening who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) within 2 years (interval CRC), the median wait was 13 months for diagnosis. Women, older patients, and those from greater socioeconomic backgrounds had a higher interval CRC rate. Almost half of these interval CRCs had a detectable FIT level at screening but below the threshold (10–79 µg haemoglobin per g).
