The most surprising part of the ULUU lab tour wasn’t the plastic. It was the seaweed. A patented enzyme called agarase helps break down seaweed carbohydrates into sugar, doubling the yield used to create bioplastic. But after the sugars are extracted, the remaining seaweed becomes 50% protein—transforming what’s left into a valuable ingredient for food and feed. Innovation doesn’t always mean waste.
