@AmarinP @RyanMcbeth For the record, I actually see both sides of this argument (to an extent). I posted the quote because not wanting to get involved in regional European conflicts has a long history in the US, and it’s not due to cowardice.
English

@_FoxtrotMichael @RyanMcbeth I get you I think. You’re protecting your marching band to keep the parade moving forward, whether the tune is relevant or not doesn’t matter. Good luck to you man. Thanks for a conversation.
English

@AmarinP @RyanMcbeth This is tiring. I’ve already said elsewhere in this thread that nowhere did Washington say we shouldn’t protect ourselves, and this philosophy would not have kept us out of WW2. You’re grasping at straws man, and you don’t even fully understand the concept in question.
English

@_FoxtrotMichael @RyanMcbeth And you don’t think philosophy should change over 250 years even after technology has changed. What would the crews of USS Arizona think? What about the passengers of some ships sunk by German’s U-boat off the coast of NC? What would Washington himself do?
English

@IterIntellectus This is how you know that he’s become more than just a man. He’s an idea, a legend, a philosophy. He is the Zeitgeist of the baby faced millennial that’s been pissed off for a long time.
English

@AmarinP @RyanMcbeth Washington is discussing foreign policy philosophy in this quote. Not tactics. Not strategy. Guiding philosophy, something that technology does not change.
English

@AmarinP @RyanMcbeth Of course it should, but we’re not talking about tactics. We’re not even talking about strategy! Only morons don’t realize the subject of a conversation,
English

@AmarinP @RyanMcbeth No, you think. I’m so tired of responses like this. The technology of the day does not change his wisdom one bit. It changes the pace of war, the ability to project force, and the military scale of a nation. It doesn’t change the idea that we should mind our own business.
English

@_FoxtrotMichael @RyanMcbeth There were no fast ships, aircraft carriers nor jets in his time. Think!
English

@ViceroyChicken @joel40hands @RyanMcbeth Washington’s statement does not, in any way, indicate we shouldn’t have entered WW2. We were attacked and Japan was allied with Germany. It does indicate that we should use discretion and stay out of power struggles that have nothing to do with us.
English

@_FoxtrotMichael @joel40hands @RyanMcbeth If we followed his philosophy then we would all be speaking German and Jews would be wiped out of existence. This isn’t 1789 anymore lil bro
English

@_xjdr @yacineMTB This is the phase I’ve been losing sleep over 😂
English

@kevinszoon @RyanMcbeth I don’t think it’s even a realistic scenario that Europe ends up in the Russian sphere. It’s a much more likely scenario that Ukraine does.
English

@_FoxtrotMichael @RyanMcbeth Yea I guess it would be so much better for America if Europe ends up in Russia’s sphere of influence or that more of these squabbling states end up with nukes because america pulled out
English

@joel40hands @RyanMcbeth His views and perspectives aged quite well actually.
English

@_FoxtrotMichael @RyanMcbeth I’m sure Washington had incredible insight on geopolitics in the 21st century.
English

@eyeslasho I'm really, really hoping that Trump can use any goodwill he's built with Russia to actually do good at this point. If not, it will be a very hollow victory.
English

@ID_AA_Carmack We absolutely need to develop small, safe, and distributed nuclear power. It's a problem worth working on. It would be incredible to have homes powered by SMRs.
English

I thought my second off-grid setup was comfortably overbuilt, with 24kw of panels and 75kwh of battery. Charging cars and running space heaters 24/7 was fine until we had a couple cases of three completely overcast days.
It only took a small tweak to the heating and not charging the Tesla from the batteries to work around, but even a $100k system is not “just as good” as a grid tie.
That nudged me to try charging the batteries with a portable generator just for the experience, and a good thing, because the configuration was wrong, and it took a lot of messing around to get it working. Not something I would have wanted to figure out under pressure on a cold dark night.
Generators feel like Stone Age technology compared to solar — gas, oil, super noisy, and the power output is so ratty that it leaves the lights flickering slightly.
I looked into propane fuel cells a couple years ago, but they were crazy expensive per watt and had relatively short lifespans.
There is definitely a level of satisfaction to independently replicating the utilities of civilization!
English

@CalDisasters @eyeslasho I never said I didn't support NATO. In fact, I do support NATO, and I support Europe's investment in their defense in addition to NATO continuing to exist.
English

I call bullshit! You need to leave that MAGA personality cult and return to reality. NATO is a defensive alliance that exists because all of its members and those wanting to join it have 300 years of unpleasant memories of the Russians. Russia has the largest nuclear force on Earth and despite their conventional military shortcomings are the most apt to use it. They are already attacked Chechnya, Georgia, & Ukraine and are now attacking Western Europe via Hybrid Warfare. Putin openly announced their aim to push out their national boundaries to their furthest historical geographic/political extent which means parts of Finland, all the Baltics, parts of Poland and right down thru the former Warsaw Pact. Putin also signed a decree stating Russian government that sold Seward's Folly to U.S. in 19th century acted illegally. So they want Alaska back and will try for it in the long game if current government is allowed to continue to exist.
English

@RyanMcbeth The idea that the US can both remain in a post-WW2 position of near absolute global power *and* float $30T+ of debt indefinitely is unrealistic. A realignment must necessarily take place. The last century of US foreign power has been an outlier.
English

@RyanMcbeth Pretending that China would assault the US directly is outrageous. It’s just never going to happen, period. The much more likely scenario is: what will we do when China invades Taiwan? The answer: major chip manufacturing will already be in the US, so probably nothing.
English

Rome’s ‘Weak Hand’ Won a War—Can Ukraine Do the Same? Special thanks to @Landswellsong for inspiring it.
