Most blockchain networks move data using simple forwarding. A node receives a block or batch, then sends the same data to multiple peers. Those peers repeat the process until the entire network is synchronized. It works, but it comes with a cost. As networks grow, the same data gets transmitted many times across different paths, creating redundancy and consuming bandwidth. This is the limitation that network coding tries to solve. > Instead of sending identical copies of data, network coding allows nodes to send encoded combinations of that data. At a high level, data is first divided into smaller pieces. Rather than forwarding each piece separately, nodes can combine multiple pieces together into coded fragments before sending them across the network. For example, instead of sending A and B separately, a node can send an encoded version of A+B. Other nodes collect different coded fragments from different peers. Once they receive enough unique combinations, they can reconstruct the original data. > This means nodes don’t need every exact piece from a single source they just need enough useful information from the network. This approach changes how data flows across the network.
