Day 13: Heard about Ghana’s fantasy coffins? The tradition originated in the 1950s, often attributed to carpenter Seth Kane Kwei (or his family) in Teshie, Ghana. The fantasy coffins are recognized as one of the most extraordinary art traditions. Among the Ga people of coastal Ghana, coffins are sometimes designed to reflect the life, profession, or aspirations of the person being buried. A fisherman may be buried in a coffin shaped like a fish. A pilot in an airplane. A farmer in a cocoa pod. A baker in a loaf of bread. The idea is simple but profound: a person’s final resting place should reflect the story of their life. These remarkable coffins are handcrafted by skilled artisans and have become celebrated pieces of contemporary African art, displayed in museums around the world. Yet their meaning remains deeply personal. They remind us that in Ghana, even farewell can be an expression of creativity, dignity and identity. If my children are reading, please an orchid for Mommy 😂 #GhanaAt69 #GhanaCulture #FantasyCoffins #ghanamonth🇬🇭
