I don’t think there’s ever been en a technology whose builders constantly promise that, if they succeed, tens of millions of jobs will be destroyed and the world might end.

AI is deeply unpopular. According to Pew, sadly only 17% of Americans think AI will have a positive impact. In China, 83% believe AI will be positive. A token tax & political backlash is coming unless the narrative changes. 🇺🇸👀🧐

@HankGreene @akoustov I dunno, there are plenty of academics on Bluesky who agree with Alex on the substance and I think this war against academic Bluesky risks its own form of epidemic closure

@akoustov I'm loving your war against academic Bluesky. The level of epistemic closure there is mind-boggling. It brings out the absolute worst thinking traits in people who are smart enough to know better.

There's a growing worry that AI will break empirical social science -- that agents can p-hack until they find something that "works." We think that worry deserves to be taken seriously. Our new paper shows that is true empirically and makes it precise: njw.fish/static/papers/…

@SeanTrende best explanation I've heard is that she owed Crockett a favor and it was the absolute least she could do while still counting the favor as called in

So I taught Intro to Public Policy last semester and students really liked it. They especially liked a case study I did comparing ClintonCare's failure to Ocare's passage. Wondering what other policy process case studies I could do. Obviously CRA 1964 is a good one. Others?

new wp: taking the "marketplace of ideas" metaphor seriously means taking the nuances of actually-existing markets seriously, which means thinking about tradeoffs between transaction costs and conformity costs. applied to misinfo and ideological belief systems (link in next post)
